Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पर्वताग्राद्विनिष्क्रान्तौ पञ्चास्याविव पन्नगौ ।
पिबन्निव बभौ चापि सोओर्मिमालं महार्णवम् ॥ ॥५-१-५७॥
parvatāgrādviniskrāntau pañcāsyāviva pannagau |
pibanniva babhau cāpi so'ormimālaṃ mahārṇavam ॥5-1-57॥
Translation
His outstretched arms resembled two five-headed serpents emerging from a mountain peak. He also appeared as if he were drinking up the great ocean with its garland of waves.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उनके दोनों फैले हुए हाथ) पर्वत के शिखर से निकले हुए पांच मुख वाले दो साँपों के समान लग रहे थे। वह (हनुमान) ऐसे सुशोभित हो रहे थे मानो लहरों की माला से युक्त महासागर को पी रहे हों।
English Commentary
This verse offers powerful, somewhat fierce imagery. The Arms: His arms extending from his mountain-like body are compared to five-headed serpents (pañcāsyāviva pannagau) slithering out of a mountain cave. The "five heads" cleverly correspond to the five fingers on each hand, emphasizing the lethal power and reach of his grip. The Stance: The second line describes his dominance. He looks as if he is about to drink up (pibanniva) the entire ocean along with its waves. This hyperbole highlights his superiority over the obstacle; the ocean is not a threat to him, but merely a draught he could consume, reminiscent of Sage Agastya.

यहाँ दो अत्यंत शक्तिशाली बिम्बों का प्रयोग किया गया है। १. भुजाओं के लिए: हनुमान जी के कंधों को पर्वत शिखर और उनकी पांच अंगुलियों वाले दोनों हाथों को 'पंचमुखी सर्प' (पन्नगौ) कहा गया है। यह उनकी भुजाओं की शक्ति और लंबाई को दर्शाता है। २. क्रिया के लिए: हनुमान जी आकाश में उड़ते हुए नीचे समुद्र को देख रहे हैं। उनकी दृष्टि और मुख की मुद्रा ऐसी लग रही है मानो वे समुद्र को पी जाना चाहते हैं। यह अगस्त्य मुनि द्वारा समुद्र पान की स्मृति दिलाता है और हनुमान जी के अदम्य साहस और 'वीर रस' को पुष्ट करता है कि वे समुद्र जैसी बाधा को भी तुच्छ (पीने योग्य) मानते हैं।
