Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
व्यरोचत महाप्राज्ञः परिवेषीव भास्करः ।
स्फिग्देशेनाभिताम्रेण रराज स महाकपिः ॥ ॥५-१-६३॥
vyarocata mahāprājñaḥ pariveṣīva bhāskaraḥ |
sphigdeśenābhitāmreṇa rarāja sa mahākapiḥ ॥5-1-63॥
Translation
The highly wise Hanuman shone like the sun surrounded by a halo. The great monkey looked resplendent with his deeply copper-red hind parts.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे महाबुद्धिमान (हनुमान) अपनी गोलाकार पूंछ के कारण 'परिवेष' (कुंडल) से घिरे हुए सूर्य के समान चमक रहे थे। अपने अत्यधिक लाल रंग के कटि-पश्चभाग (कमर के पिछले हिस्से) से वे महाकपि अत्यंत सुशोभित हो रहे थे।
English Commentary
Here, the comparison to the sun is refined. The curled tail surrounding his body makes him resemble the sun encircled by a halo (pariveṣīva bhāskaraḥ). Interestingly, the poet uses the epithet mahāprājñaḥ (the great wise one) amidst physical descriptions, reminding us of his intellect despite his animal form. The verse also candidly describes his anatomy—specifically the sphigdeśa (buttocks/hind quarters)—noting their deep red color (abhitāmreṇa), which is a characteristic feature of macaques and other monkeys. This grounds the divine flight in biological reality.

इस श्लोक में हनुमान जी को 'महाप्राज्ञ' (अत्यंत बुद्धिमान) कहा गया है, जो शारीरिक बल के साथ-साथ उनकी मानसिक क्षमता को भी याद दिलाता है। उनकी मुड़ी हुई पूंछ ने उन्हें घेर रखा है, जिससे वे 'परिवेषी भास्कर' (आभामंडल युक्त सूर्य) जैसे लग रहे हैं। श्लोक का उत्तरार्ध वानर शरीर के यथार्थवादी चित्रण पर केंद्रित है। 'स्फिग्देश' (वानर के शरीर का पिछला भाग) जो स्वाभाविक रूप से लाल होता है, उसकी तुलना अगले श्लोक में पर्वत के गैरिक (लाल मिट्टी/गेरू) से की जाएगी। वाल्मीकि देवता और पशु के रूप का अद्भुत मिश्रण कर रहे हैं।
