मेरुमन्दरसंकाशानुद्धतान् स महार्णवे ।
अत्यक्रामन्महावेगस्तरङ्गान् गणयन्निव ॥ ॥५-१-७२॥
merumandarasān kāśānuddhatān sa mahārṇave |
atyakrāmanmahāvegastaraṅgān gaṇayanniva ॥5-1-72॥
Translation
Possessing great speed, he crossed over the waves rising in the great ocean, which resembled Mount Meru and Mandara, as if he were counting them.
हिंदी अनुवाद
महान वेग वाले वह (हनुमान) महासागर में उठे हुए मेरु और मन्दराचल पर्वत के समान विशाल तरंगों को ऐसे लांघते जा रहे थे, मानो उनकी गिनती कर रहे हों।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses the highest standards of comparison for the waves: Meru and Mandara, the cosmic mountains. This highlights the terrifying height of the ocean swell. Yet, Hanuman’s interaction with them is described with the phrase gaṇayanniva (as if counting them). This suggests ease and composure. He is not struggling against them; he is rhythmically passing them one by one, maintaining such a steady pace and focus that it appeared he was tallying them. It illustrates his dominance over the environment.

समुद्र की लहरें अब केवल लहरें नहीं रहीं, उनकी तुलना पौराणिक पर्वतों 'मेरु' और 'मन्दर' से की गई है, जो अपनी विशालता के लिए प्रसिद्ध हैं। हनुमान जी इन विशाल लहरों को बड़ी आसानी से पार कर रहे हैं। 'गणयन्निव' (मानो गिन रहे हों) पद अत्यंत सुंदर है। इसका भाव यह है कि जैसे कोई व्यक्ति सहजता से एक-दो-तीन करके सीढ़ियाँ या खंभे पार करता है और गिनता जाता है, वैसे ही हनुमान जी उन भयावह लहरों को खेल-खेल में पार कर रहे थे। उन्हें उन लहरों से कोई भय नहीं था, बल्कि वे उनके लिए गिनती की वस्तु मात्र थीं।
