Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
देवराज्ञा गिरिश्रेष्ठ परिघः संनिवेशितः ।
त्वमेषां जातवीर्याणां पुनरेवोत्पतिष्यताम् ॥ ॥५-१-९३॥
devarājñā giriśreṣṭha parighaḥ saṃniveśitaḥ । tvameṣāṃ jātavīryāṇāṃ punarevotpatiṣyatām ॥ ॥5-1-93॥
Translation
"...You were placed there by the King of Devas (Indra) as a barrier to obstruct those powerful Asuras who might try to rise up again."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"...(उन असुरों के) ऊपर आने के मार्ग को रोकने के लिए देवराज इंद्र ने तुम्हें अर्गला (परिघ/दरवाजे की सांकल) के रूप में स्थापित किया है, ताकि वे शक्तिशाली असुर पुनः ऊपर न आ सकें।"
English Commentary
This verse explains Mainaka's mythological function. He acts as a parigha—a heavy iron bar used to bolt massive gates. Indra placed him there to physically block the Asuras (demons) from rising out of the abyss (Patala) to attack the upper worlds. This establishes Mainaka's credentials: he is a divinely appointed guardian with immense structural integrity, capable of withstanding the force of rising demons, and thus sturdy enough to support Hanuman.

सागर मैनाक को उसके उद्देश्य का स्मरण करा रहे हैं। इंद्र ने मैनाक को पाताल के द्वार पर एक 'परिघ' (लोहे की छड़ या सांकल) की तरह रखा है। जब भी असुर पाताल से पृथ्वी या स्वर्ग पर आक्रमण करने के लिए ऊपर उठने (उत्पतिष्यताम्) का प्रयास करते हैं, तो मैनाक उन्हें रोकता है। यह मैनाक की शक्ति और भारीपन को दर्शाता है। जो पर्वत असुरों को रोक सकता है, वह निश्चित रूप से हनुमान जी का भार वहन करने में सक्षम है।
