Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पीत्वा अपि उपरतम् च अपि ददर्श स महा कपिः ।
भास्करे शयने वीरम् प्रसुप्तम् राक्षस अधिपम् ॥५-१०-११॥
Pītvā api uparatam ca api dadarśa sa mahā kapiḥ । Bhāskare śayane vīram prasuptam rākṣasa adhipam ॥ ॥5-10-11॥
Translation
The great monkey (Hanuman) saw that heroic Lord of Rakshasas, who had ceased activity after drinking, fast asleep on a bed shining like the sun.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस महाकपि (हनुमान) ने सूर्य के समान चमकते हुए (भास्करे) पलंग पर मदिरा पीकर सोए हुए (उपरतम्) उस वीर राक्षसराज को देखा।
English Commentary
The juxtaposition here is striking: Ravana is intoxicated (pītvā) and unconscious in sleep, yet he is still referred to as vīram (the hero/warrior). This suggests that his martial aura is innate and present even when he is vulnerable. The bed is compared to the sun (bhāskare), creating an image of a glowing, radiant dais supporting a powerful entity. Hanuman observes this contrast between the moral degradation of drunkenness and the physical majesty of the warrior.

हनुमान जी की दृष्टि अब रावण की अवस्था पर पड़ती है। 'पीत्वा अपि' (पीकर भी) का अर्थ है कि वह मदिरा के प्रभाव में है। फिर भी कवि ने उसे 'वीरम्' (वीर) कहा है। रावण का तेज इतना अधिक है कि सोए हुए और नशे में होने के बावजूद उसकी वीरता क्षीण नहीं हुई है। 'भास्करे शयने' (सूर्य जैसे पलंग पर) रावण का लेटना ऐसा है मानो स्वयं सूर्य अस्त होकर विश्राम कर रहे हों। यह रावण के 'तेज' (radiance) को रेखांकित करता है।
