Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दान्तकाञ्चनिचित्राङ्गेर्वैश्च वरासनैः ।
महार्हस्तरणोपेतैरुपपन्नम् महाधनैः ॥५-१०-२॥
Dānta kāñcana citra aṅgair vaiśca varāsanaiḥ । Mahārha astaraṇa upetair upapannam mahādhanaiḥ ॥ ॥5-10-2॥
Translation
That couch was crafted with parts made of ivory and gold, variegated and beautiful. It was furnished with excellent seats (cushions) and covered with immensely valuable bedspreads.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह पलंग हाथीदाँत (दान्त) और सोने (काञ्चन) के बने हुए विविध अंगों से युक्त था। वह बहुमूल्य और श्रेष्ठ आसनों (बिछौनों) से तथा अत्यधिक कीमती चादरों से ढका हुआ था।
English Commentary
This verse details the material composition of the royal couch. The combination of dānta (ivory) and kāñcana (gold) represents the pinnacle of ancient luxury materials. The term citra aṅgaiḥ implies intricate carvings or inlays. The bedding is not just soft but mahādhanaiḥ (of great wealth/cost). Scholarly analysis suggests this serves to heighten the contrast between Ravana's sleep (on ivory and gold) and Rama's sleep (on grass and leaves in the forest), intensifying the villainy of Ravana enjoying while the rightful hero suffers.

यहाँ उस शय्या की बनावट (Craftsmanship) का वर्णन है। 'दान्त' (हाथीदाँत) और 'काञ्चन' (सोना) का मिश्रण प्राचीन काल में राजकीय फर्नीचर की सर्वोच्च श्रेणी मानी जाती थी। 'चित्र-अंगैः' का अर्थ है कि उस पलंग के पायदान और बाहें नक्काशीदार थीं। 'महार्ह' (महा+अर्ह) का अर्थ है जिसका मूल्य बहुत अधिक हो। यह श्लोक रावण की अत्यधिक समृद्धि (महाधनैः) को दर्शाता है। वाल्मीकि जी एक-एक वस्तु का सूक्ष्म वर्णन करके पाठक के मन में रावण के ऐश्वर्य का चित्र खींच रहे हैं।
