Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उत्तम स्त्री विम्र्दितौ गन्ध उत्तम निषेवितौ ।
यक्ष पन्नग गन्धर्व देव दानव राविणौ ॥५-१०-२०॥
Uttama strī vimṛditau gandha uttama niṣevitau । Yakṣa pannaga gandharva deva dānava rāviṇau ॥ ॥5-10-20॥
Translation
Those arms had been massaged by excellent women and attended to with the best fragrances. (Yet, they were the same arms) that made Yakshas, Pannagas (serpents), Gandharvas, Devas, and Danavas cry out (in pain/terror).
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन भुजाओं की मालिश (विमर्दित) उत्तम स्त्रियों द्वारा की गई थी; वे श्रेष्ठ सुगंधों से सेवित थीं। (किन्तु वही भुजाएँ) यक्षों, नागों, गंधर्वों, देवताओं और दानवों को रुलाने वाली (चीत्कार करवाने वाली) थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs a sharp contrast here. The arms are objects of care, massaged by lovers (strī vimṛditau) and perfumed. Yet, the very next line identifies them as the source of universal terror, making all celestial beings 'cry out' (rāviṇau). This etymological play on Ravana's name (the one who makes others cry) defines his arms as the executors of his will—capable of receiving immense pleasure and inflicting immense pain.

यह श्लोक 'विरोधाभास' (Contrast) का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। एक ओर वे भुजाएँ इतनी कोमल हैं कि स्त्रियाँ उनकी मालिश करती हैं और उनसे सुगंध आती है। दूसरी ओर, वे इतनी क्रूर हैं कि उन्होंने देव-दानवों को 'राविणौ' (रुलाया) है। 'राविण' शब्द से ही 'रावण' नाम की सार्थकता सिद्ध होती है (रावयति इति रावणः - जो रुलाता है, वह रावण है)। हनुमान जी देख रहे हैं कि विलास और विनाश एक ही शरीर में बसते हैं।
