चूत पुम्नाग सुरभिर् बकुल उत्तम सम्युतः ।
मृष्ट अन्न रस सम्युक्तः पान गन्ध पुरः सरः ॥ ॥५-१०-२३॥
cūta pumnāga surabhir bakula uttama saṃyutaḥ । mṛṣṭa anna rasa saṃyuktaḥ pāna gandha puraḥ saraḥ ॥ ॥5-10-23॥
Translation
His breath carried the fragrance of mango, Punnaga, and excellent Bakula flowers. It was also infused with the essence of delicious food and the scent of liquor.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस (रावण) के मुख से आम, पुन्नाग और उत्तम बकुल (मौलसिरी) के फूलों की सुगन्ध आ रही थी। साथ ही, वह श्वास सुस्वादु भोजन के रसों और मदिरा की गन्ध से भी युक्त थी।
English Commentary
Valmiki provides a vivid olfactory description of Ravana’s presence. The breath exuding from the sleeping king is a cocktail of scents: the natural, sweet fragrance of Mango, Punnaga, and Bakula flowers mixed with the heavy, rich aromas of seasoned food (mṛṣṭa anna) and alcohol (pāna). This combination signifies extreme indulgence and luxury. It paints a picture of a ruler who has just retired after a night of opulent feasting and enjoyment. The juxtaposition of floral fragrances with the smell of meat and wine subtly hints at the commingling of refined taste and carnal appetites that defines Ravana’s character as a hedonistic antagonist.

यह श्लोक रावण के भोग-विलास और उसके राजकीय जीवनशैली का घ्राण बिम्ब (olfactory image) प्रस्तुत करता है। रावण के निश्वास में विभिन्न सुगन्धों का मिश्रण है—चूत (आम), पुन्नाग और बकुल के पुष्पों की सात्विक सुगन्ध के साथ-साथ 'मृष्ट अन्न' (स्वादिष्ट भोजन) और मदिरा की तामसिक गन्ध भी मिश्रित है। यह मिश्रण रावण के चरित्र की जटिलता को दर्शाता है, जहाँ उच्च कुल और ज्ञान (पुष्प सुगन्ध) के साथ आसुरी वृत्तियाँ और भोग (मदिरा) मिले हुए हैं। यह वर्णन वातावरण को मादक बनाता है और हनुमान जी द्वारा अनुभव की जा रही रावण की उपस्थिति को और अधिक सजीव करता है।
