मद व्यायाम खिन्नाः ताः राक्षस इन्द्रस्य योषितः ।
तेषु तेष्व् अवकाशेषु प्रसुप्ताः तनु मध्यमाः ॥ ॥५-१०-३५॥
mada vyāyāma khinnāḥ tāḥ rākṣasa indrasya yoṣitaḥ । teṣu teṣv avakāśeṣu prasuptāḥ tanu madhyamāḥ ॥ ॥5-10-35॥
Translation
Exhausted by intoxication and exertion (from sport or dance), those slender-waisted wives of the Rakshasa King slept wherever they found space.

मद (नशा) और व्यायाम (क्रीड़ा/नृत्य आदि के परिश्रम) से थकी हुई राक्षसराज (रावण) की वे कृश-कटि (पतली कमर वाली) पत्नियाँ, जहाँ जिसको जगह मिली, वहीं सो गई थीं।
English Commentary
This verse explains the chaotic arrangement of the sleepers. The women are described as mada vyāyāma khinnāḥ—fatigued by a combination of intoxication and physical exertion (likely dance and sport). The result is a total loss of decorum; they have fallen asleep teṣu teṣv avakāśeṣu (in whatever spaces were available), rather than in their designated beds. The epithet tanu madhyamāḥ (slender-waisted) reiterates standard classical beauty ideals. The scene captures the aftermath of royal indulgence, where fatigue has overpowered etiquette, leaving the queens of Lanka strewn across the palace floor.

यह श्लोक उस परिस्थिति का वर्णन करता है जिसके कारण यह विचित्र दृश्य उपस्थित हुआ। 'मद' (मदिरा पान) और 'व्यायाम' (नृत्य-संगीत की क्रीड़ा) के कारण स्त्रियाँ अत्यंत थक गई थीं ('खिन्नाः')। इस थकान और नशे के कारण वे अपने शयन कक्षों या बिस्तरों तक भी नहीं जा सकीं और 'तेषु तेष्व् अवकाशेषु' (जहाँ-तहाँ रिक्त स्थानों पर) ही सो गईं। 'तनु मध्यमाः' (पतली कमर वाली) विशेषण उनके शारीरिक सौंदर्य और सुकुमारता को दर्शाता है, जो कठोर फर्श या आसनों पर सोए होने पर भी कम नहीं होता। यह दृश्य एक भव्य उत्सव के समापन के बाद की निस्तब्धता और अव्यवस्था का चित्रण है।
