Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
काचिद् वीणाम् परिष्वज्य प्रसुप्ता सम्प्रकाशते ।
महा नदी प्रकीर्णा इव नलिनी पोतम् आश्रिता ॥ ॥५-१०-३७॥
kācid vīṇām pariṣvajya prasuptā samprakāśate । mahā nadī prakīrṇā iva nalinī potam āśritā ॥ ॥5-10-37॥
Translation
One woman, sleeping while hugging her Veena, appeared like a lotus plant resting against a boat in a flowing great river.
हिंदी अनुवाद
कोई (स्त्री) वीणा को गले लगाकर सोई हुई ऐसी सुशोभित हो रही थी, मानो महानदी (गंगा) में तैरती हुई कोई कमलिनी किसी नाव का सहारा लेकर स्थित हो।
English Commentary
This verse employs a striking simile. A woman is sleeping clutching her musical instrument, the Veena. She is compared to a nalinī (lotus plant) and the Veena to a potam (boat). The imagery suggests that just as a delicate lotus plant might drift in a great river (mahā nadī) and cling to a boat for stability, the woman, drifting in the river of sleep and intoxication, clings to her instrument. The juxtaposition of the wooden instrument and the floral softness of the woman highlights her fragility and the protective role of her beloved art instrument.
हिंदी टीका
यहाँ एक बहुत ही सुन्दर 'उत्प्रेक्षा' (metaphor/simile) है। स्त्री ने वीणा को आलिंगन में ले रखा है। कवि स्त्री की तुलना 'नलिनी' (कमलिनी/कमल के पौधे) से और वीणा की तुलना 'पोतम्' (नाव) से करते हैं। जैसे नदी की धारा में बहती हुई कमलिनी किसी नाव से लिपट जाती है या उसका सहारा ले लेती है, वैसे ही मदिरा और नींद की धारा में बहती हुई वह स्त्री वीणा का सहारा लेकर सो रही है। वीणा का आकार और लकड़ी की बनावट नाव की याद दिलाती है, और स्त्री की कोमलता कमल की। यह दृश्य शांति और निर्भरता (dependence) का भाव उत्पन्न करता है।
