Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आतोद्यानि विचित्राणि परिष्वज्य वर स्त्रियः ।
निपीड्य च कुचैः सुप्ताः कामिन्यः कामुकान् इव ॥५-१०-४९॥
ātodyāni vicitrāṇi pariṣvajya vara striyaḥ । nipīḍya ca kucaiḥ suptāḥ kāminyaḥ kāmukān iva ॥5-10-49॥
Translation
Other excellent women slept embracing their various musical instruments, pressing them against their breasts, just as loving women would embrace their lovers.

कई श्रेष्ठ रूपवती स्त्रियां अपने विचित्र वाद्य यंत्रों को ही छाती से लगाकर, अपने स्तनों से दबाकर इस प्रकार सो रही थीं, मानो वे कामुक स्त्रियां अपने प्रेमियों का आलिंगन कर रही हों।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a striking simile here to describe the bond between the women and their art, distorted by intoxication. The women are sleeping while clutching their musical instruments (atodyani). The manner in which they hold these instruments—pressing them tightly against their chests—mirrors the embrace of a lover (kamukan iva). This personification of the instruments highlights the women's state of mind; in their semi-conscious state, the instruments providing them with pleasure during the waking hours have replaced their human partners in sleep. It suggests a deep immersion in the sensory pleasures of music and touch. The scene reinforces the atmosphere of a party that ended in sudden, overwhelming exhaustion, where the revelers collapsed exactly where they were, holding onto the objects of their revelry.

यह श्लोक रावण के अंतःपुर की सांगीतिक और कलात्मक रुचि के साथ-साथ उनकी वर्तमान अचेतन अवस्था का संगम है। 'आतोद्यानि' का अर्थ है विभिन्न प्रकार के वाद्य यंत्र (जैसे वीणा, मृदंग आदि)। ये स्त्रियां संगीत और नृत्य से थककर सो गई हैं, लेकिन अपने वाद्य यंत्रों से उनका लगाव इतना गहरा है कि नींद में भी उन्होंने उन्हें नहीं छोड़ा। कवि उत्प्रेक्षा अलंकार का प्रयोग करते हुए कहते हैं कि वे वाद्य यंत्रों को ऐसे चिपकाए हुए हैं जैसे प्रेमिका अपने प्रेमी (कामुक) को आलिंगन करती है। यह तुलना यह भी ध्वनित करती है कि उन स्त्रियों के जीवन में संगीत और विलास ही उनके साथी हैं। निर्जीव वाद्य यंत्रों के साथ सजीव प्रेमियों जैसा व्यवहार उनकी मदिरा-जनित भ्रांति और काम-वासना की अतृप्ति को भी दर्शाता है।
