स ताम् दृष्ट्वा महा बाहुर् भूषिताम् मारुत आत्मजः ।
तर्कयाम् आस सीता इति रूप यौवन सम्पदा ॥५-१०-५३॥
sa tām dṛṣṭvā mahā bāhur bhūṣitām māruta ātmajaḥ । tarkayām āsa sītā iti rūpa yauvana sampadā ॥5-10-53॥
Translation
Seeing her adorned with ornaments, the mighty-armed son of the wind god, reasoned that "This must be Sita," based on the wealth of her beauty and youth.

महाबाहु पवनपुत्र हनुमान उसे (मंदोदरी को) आभूषणों से सजी हुई देखकर, उसके रूप और यौवन की संपत्ति (समृद्धि) के कारण, यह तर्क करने लगे (अनुमान लगाने लगे) कि "यही सीता है।"
English Commentary
This is a critical pivot point in the narrative. Hanuman, despite his wisdom, falls into an error of judgment. Upon seeing Mandodari's unmatched beauty and youth (rupa yauvana sampada), he hypothesizes (tarkayam asa) that she is Sita. Since he had never seen Sita before, he relied on the assumption that a woman of such commanding beauty and royal bearing must be the one Rama yearns for. The verse highlights the fallibility of deduction based solely on physical appearance. It creates dramatic tension; the reader knows this is Mandodari, the wife of the antagonist, but momentarily, the protagonist believes he has achieved his goal.

यह सुंदरकाण्ड का एक अत्यंत मानवीय और मनोवैज्ञानिक क्षण है। बुद्धिमान होते हुए भी हनुमान जी से चूक होती है। 'तर्कयाम् आस' (तर्क किया/अनुमान लगाया) - यह ज्ञान नहीं, केवल अनुमान था। कारण क्या था? 'रूप यौवन सम्पदा'—मंदोदरी का रूप और यौवन सीता के समान ही दिव्य और राजसी था। चूँकि हनुमान जी ने पहले कभी सीता को नहीं देखा था, इसलिए उन्होंने मंदोदरी के तेज और राजसी ठाठ को देखकर सोचा कि राम की पत्नी ऐसी ही तेजस्वी होनी चाहिए। यह श्लोक दर्शाता है कि बाह्य रूप-रंग भ्रामक हो सकता है। यहाँ हनुमान जी की 'महाबाहु' और 'मारुतात्मज' जैसी उपाधियाँ यह याद दिलाने के लिए हैं कि इतने महान वीर का भी भ्रमित होना, मायावी लंका के प्रभाव या सीता के प्रति उनकी तीव्र उत्कंठा का परिणाम है।
