Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वृतम् आभरणैर् दिव्यैः सुरूपम् काम रूपिणम् ।
सव्र्क्ष वन गुल्म आढ्यम् प्रसुप्तम् इव मन्दरम् ॥५-१०-९॥
Vṛtam ābharaṇair divyaiḥ surūpam kāma rūpiṇam । Savṛkṣa vana gulma āḍhyam prasuptam iva mandaram ॥ ॥5-10-9॥
Translation
He was covered with divine ornaments, possessed a beautiful form, and could assume any shape at will. He looked like the Mandara Mountain, rich with trees, forests, and thickets, lying asleep.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह दिव्य आभूषणों से लदा हुआ था, उसका रूप सुंदर था और वह इच्छानुसार रूप धारण करने वाला (कामरूपी) था। वह ऐसा लग रहा था मानो वृक्षों, वनों और झाड़ियों से संपन्न 'मंदराचल पर्वत' सो रहा हो।
English Commentary
The final simile in this sequence compares Ravana to Mandara Mountain. This implies massiveness and immovability. The jewels and garlands on his body are equated to the vṛkṣa (trees) and gulma (bushes) of the mountain. Describing him as surūpam (handsome) and kāma rūpiṇam (shape-shifter) reminds the reader of his dangerous deception. He is a sleeping giant, physically overwhelming even in a state of rest.

यहाँ रावण की तुलना 'मंदराचल पर्वत' से की गई है। मंदराचल वह पर्वत है जिससे समुद्र मंथन हुआ था—यह विशालता और दृढ़ता का प्रतीक है। रावण के शरीर पर जो आभूषण और वस्त्र हैं, वे उस पर्वत के झाड़-झंखाड़ (वन-गुल्म) की तरह हैं। 'कामरूपिणम्' याद दिलाता है कि यह सौम्य रूप उसका वास्तविक या एकमात्र रूप नहीं है, वह मायावी है। हनुमान जी के सामने एक विशाल पहाड़ जैसा व्यक्तित्व सो रहा है, जिसे हिलाना असंभव प्रतीत होता है।
