पद्मिनीनाम् प्रसुप्तानाम् रूपम् आसीद् यथैव हि ।
एवम् सर्वम् अशेषेण रावण अन्तः पुरम् कपिः ॥ ॥५-११-३५॥
padminīnām prasuptānām rūpam āsīd yathaiva hi । evam sarvam aśeṣeṇa rāvaṇa antaḥ puram kapiḥ ॥ ॥5-11-35॥
Translation
Their appearance was indeed just like that of sleeping lotuses (in a pond). Thus, the Monkey saw the entire inner apartment of Ravana without exception.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे (रात में) सोई हुई कमलिनियों (कमल के समूह) का रूप होता है, ठीक वैसा ही रूप उन सबका था। इस प्रकार कपि (हनुमान) ने रावण के उस पूरे अंतःपुर को देखा।
English Commentary
The metaphor of the Padmini (lotus pond) is classic Sanskrit poetics. At night, lotuses close their petals; similarly, the women have closed their eyes and limbs in sleep. This imagery softens the previous descriptions of intoxication, lending a natural, almost botanical beauty to the scene. Hanuman scans the entire (sarvam asheshena) area, confirming that he has missed nothing in his search for Sita.
हिंदी टीका
वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ एक प्रसिद्ध उपमा देते हैं—'प्रसुप्त पद्मिनी'। जैसे रात में कमल बंद हो जाते हैं, वैसे ही ये स्त्रियाँ सो रही थीं। उनके मुख कमल समान थे और बंद आँखें मुंदी हुई पंखुड़ियों समान। यह उपमा शृंगारिक होते हुए भी पवित्रता का आभास देती है, क्योंकि कमल कीचड़ में भी निर्लिप्त रहता है। हनुमान जी ने 'अशेषेण' (बिना कुछ छोड़े) सब देख लिया, जो उनकी खोजी दृष्टि (scanning) की पूर्णता को दिखाता है।
