English Commentary
A critical verse contrasting presence and absence. He saw (dadarsha) the harem, but did not see (na dadarsha) Janaki. The epithet Sumaha Teja (of great brilliance) implies his internal moral light which remains dimmable amidst the darkness of the harem. The act of nirikshamanah (closely observing/scrutinizing) these women sets the stage for the moral anxiety that follows immediately.

यह एक 'टर्नल पॉइंट' (मोड़) है। हनुमान जी 'सुमहातेजा' हैं (महान ओज वाले), जिसका अर्थ है कि वे बाहरी दृश्यों से प्रभावित नहीं होते। उन्होंने रावण की हजारों रानियों को देखा, पर उनकी आँखें केवल जानकी को ढूँढ रही थीं। सीता के न मिलने पर जो निराशा है, और पराई स्त्रियों को देखने का जो संकोच है, वह अब उनके मन में द्वंद्व उत्पन्न करेगा। यह श्लोक खोज की विफलता और नैतिक संकट का सेतु है।
