Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इदम् खलु मम अत्यर्थम् धर्म लोपम् करिष्यति ।
न हि मे पर दाराणाम् दृष्टिर् विषय वर्तिनी ॥ ॥५-११-३८॥
idam khalu mama atyartham dharma lopam kariṣyati । na hi me para dārāṇām dṛṣṭir viṣaya vartinī ॥ ॥5-11-38॥
Translation
"This will indeed cause a great violation of my Dharma. For my sight does not dwell on the wives of others with sensual intent."

"यह (दृश्य) निश्चित रूप से मेरे धर्म का भारी लोप (नाश) करेगा, क्योंकि मेरी दृष्टि कभी भी पराई स्त्रियों की ओर काम-भावना (विषय वासना) से नहीं जाती।"
English Commentary
Hanuman articulates his dilemma. He fears Dharma lopa (omission/destruction of duty). However, he anchors himself in his track record: his gaze (drishti) has never been vishaya vartini (dwelling on sense objects/lustful). He distinguishes between the mechanical act of seeing and the psychological act of lusting. This is a profound statement on Brahmacharya (celibacy)—it is not blindness to the world, but detachment from the desire for it.

हनुमान जी आत्म-विश्लेषण करते हैं। वे कहते हैं 'इदम्' (यह कृत्य) धर्म का लोप कर सकता है। परन्तु अगली ही पंक्ति में वे अपने चरित्र की नींव रखते हैं—'न हि मे... विषय वर्तिनी'। वे स्वयं को याद दिलाते हैं कि उनकी दृष्टि में आज तक कभी विकार नहीं आया। यह श्लोक सिद्ध करता है कि पाप क्रिया में नहीं, बल्कि 'दृष्टि' (intent/gaze) में होता है। यदि देखने वाले का भाव शुद्ध है, तो दृश्य उसे दूषित नहीं कर सकता।
