Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अन्या इयम् इति निश्चित्य पान भूमौ चचार सः ।
क्रीडितेन अपराः क्लान्ता गीतेन च तथा पराः ॥ ॥५-११-४॥
anyā iyam iti niścitya pāna bhūmau cacāra saḥ । krīḍitena aparāḥ klāntā gītena ca tathā parāḥ ॥ ॥5-11-4॥
Translation
"This is a different place," ascertaining this, he (Hanuman) walked through that drinking hall. There, some women were exhausted from playing, and others from singing.

‘यह (शयनकक्ष से) कोई भिन्न स्थान है,’ ऐसा निश्चय करके उन्होंने उस पानभूमि में विचरण किया। वहाँ कुछ स्त्रियाँ क्रीड़ा (खेल) से थक गई थीं और कुछ गायन से।
English Commentary
Hanuman's discerning intellect represents the quality of Viveka (discrimination). Even amidst the overwhelming opulence of the palace, he correctly identifies this space not as the main sleeping chamber, but as the Panabhumi (drinking hall). The verse depicts a scene of post-festivity exhaustion. The women are not sleeping due to natural circadian rhythm but from the sheer physical exertion of pleasure—sports, games, and singing. This sets the stage for a description of decadence, contrasting the chaotic sleep of the intoxicated courtiers with the alert, purposeful wakefulness of Hanuman.

हनुमान जी की तीक्ष्ण बुद्धि और अवलोकन क्षमता यहाँ स्पष्ट होती है। रावण के अंतःपुर की भव्यता इतनी विशाल है कि कक्षों का भेद करना कठिन है, परन्तु हनुमान जी तुरंत समझ गए कि यह शयनकक्ष नहीं, अपितु 'पानभूमि' (मधुशाला या बैंक्वेट हॉल) है। वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ राक्षसियों की स्थिति का वर्णन करते हैं—वे विलासिता और मनोरंजन में इतनी लिप्त थीं कि थकान के कारण वहीं निद्रामग्न हो गईं। यह दृश्य रावण की सभा में कला, संगीत और क्रीड़ा की प्रधानता को दर्शाता है, जहाँ आनंद ही जीवन का मुख्य उद्देश्य प्रतीत होता है।
