रूप सम्ल्लाप शीलेन युक्त गीत अर्थ भाषिणा ।
देश काल अभियुक्तेन युक्त वाक्य अभिधायिना ॥ ॥५-११-७॥
rūpa samllāpa śīlena yukta gīta artha bhāṣiṇā । deśa kāla abhiyuktena yukta vākya abhidhāyinā ॥ ॥5-11-7॥
Translation
(Hanuman saw Ravana) who was endowed with beauty and conversation skills, who could express the meaning of songs, and who spoke sentences appropriate to the place and time.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(हनुमान जी ने रावण को देखा जो) रूप और वार्तालाप के स्वभाव से युक्त, गीतों के अर्थ को समझने/बोलने वाले, तथा देश और काल के अनुरूप उचित वाक्य बोलने वाले (स्त्रियों के समूह से घिरा था)।
English Commentary

यह श्लोक थोड़ा जटिल है और इसका संबंध रावण के व्यक्तित्व और उस परिवेश से है। यद्यपि रावण एक राक्षस है, वाल्मीकि उसके गुणों (virtues) को छिपाते नहीं हैं। यहाँ रावण और उसके परिवेश की बौद्धिक और कलात्मक श्रेष्ठता का वर्णन है। वहाँ का वातावरण केवल कामुक नहीं था, बल्कि काव्य, संगीत और अर्थपूर्ण वार्तालाप से युक्त था। रावण 'देश-काल' के अनुसार बोलने में निपुण था, जो एक कुशल राजनीतिज्ञ और शासक का लक्षण है। यह विरोधाभास—पांडित्य और पाशविकता का मिश्रण—रावण के चरित्र की कुंजी है।
