Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रत अभिरत संसुप्तम् ददर्श हरि यूथपः ।
तासाम् मध्ये महा बाहुः शुशुभे राक्षस ईश्वरः ॥ ॥५-११-८॥
rata abhirata saṃsuptam dadarśa hari yūthapaḥ । tāsām madhye mahā bāhuḥ śuśubhe rākṣasa īśvaraḥ ॥ ॥5-11-8॥
Translation
The commander of the monkeys (Hanuman) saw the long-armed Lord of Rakshasas sleeping amidst them, having been intent on pleasure. He shone deeply amidst them.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वानरयूथपति (हनुमान) ने उन स्त्रियों के मध्य रति-क्रीड़ा में आसक्त होकर सोए हुए महाबाहु राक्षसराज (रावण) को देखा। वह उन सबके बीच सुशोभित हो रहा था।
English Commentary
Hanuman, described here as Hari Yuthapa (leader of monkeys), spots the central figure of the scene. Ravana is styled as Maha Bahu (great-armed), a standard epithet for warriors indicating martial prowess. The visual composition is centered on Ravana surrounded by women. The verb shushubhe (shone/looked splendid) indicates that despite his demonic nature, Ravana possessed an undeniable majesty and aura. This underscores the challenge before Rama—his enemy is not a weakling but a glorious, powerful monarch at the height of his enjoyment.

यहाँ हनुमान जी का रावण से प्रथम प्रत्यक्ष (सोते हुए) साक्षात्कार होता है। 'महाबाहु' विशेषण रावण के शारीरिक बल को दर्शाता है। हनुमान जी उसे 'राक्षस ईश्वर' के रूप में देखते हैं जो स्त्रियों के बीच वैसे ही शोभा पा रहा है जैसे तारों के बीच चंद्रमा। यहाँ 'शुशुभे' (सुशोभित होना) शब्द का प्रयोग अद्भुत है—यद्यपि रावण शत्रु है और अधर्मी है, उसका तेज और राजसी प्रभाव इतना प्रबल है कि वह देखने में भव्य लगता है। हनुमान जी एक निष्पक्ष दृष्टा की भाँति उसके प्रभाव को स्वीकार करते हैं।
