स तस्य मध्ये भवनस्य वानरो ।
लता गृहान् चित्र गृहान् निशा गृहान् ।
जगाम सीताम् प्रति दर्शन उत्सुकः ।
न च एव ताम् पश्यति चारु दर्शनाम् ॥ ॥५-१२-१॥
Sa tasya madhye bhavanasya vānaro |
Latā gṛhān citra gṛhān niśā gṛhān |
Jagāma sītām prati darśanotsukaḥ |
Na caiva tām paśyati cāru darśanām ॥5-12-1॥
Translation
Eager to catch a sight of Sita, that Vanara went through the creeper-houses, picture-galleries, and night-houses located within that palace complex; yet, he did not see the beautiful-looking Sita.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सीता के दर्शन के लिए उत्सुक उस वानर (हनुमान) ने उस भवन के मध्य में स्थित लता-गृहों, चित्र-गृहों (Art galleries) और निशा-गृहों (Night houses) में जाकर खोज की, किन्तु उन्होंने उन सुंदर दर्शन वाली सीता को नहीं देखा।
English Commentary
This verse details the exhaustive nature of Hanuman's search within the royal precinct. He explores specific architectural features: Latā gṛhān (arbors/creeper houses), Citra gṛhān (art galleries), and Niśā gṛhān (night retreats). This indicates the opulence and complexity of Ravana's palace. Hanuman is described as Darśanotsukaḥ—filled with an intense eagerness or anxiety to see her. The tragedy is heightened by the description of Sita as Cāru darśanām (pleasing to the sight/beautiful). The contrast between his intense eagerness and the repeated failure to find her builds the narrative tension. It shows that he left no stone unturned, checking even places of leisure where a prisoner would undeniably not be kept, driven by desperation.

बारहवें सर्ग के इस प्रथम श्लोक में हनुमान जी की खोज का विस्तार बताया गया है। वे केवल शयनकक्षों तक सीमित नहीं रहे, अपितु महल के अन्य विलासिता पूर्ण स्थानों—जैसे लता-मंडप, चित्रशाला और रात्रि विश्राम गृहों—में भी गए। 'दर्शन उत्सुकः' पद उनकी व्याकुलता और तीव्रता को दर्शाता है। रावण का भवन कितना विशाल और भूलभुलैया जैसा है, इसका अनुमान इन विविध 'गृहों' के उल्लेख से लगता है। 'चारु दर्शनाम्' (सुंदर दिखने वाली) विशेषण का प्रयोग कर वाल्मीकि जी करुणा उत्पन्न करते हैं—कि जो इतनी सुंदर हैं और जिनके दर्शन दुर्लभ हैं, वे इस राक्षसी वातावरण में कहीं लुप्त हो गई हैं। हनुमान जी का हर एक कदम आशा और निराशा के बीच झूल रहा है।
