चतुर् अन्गुल मात्रो अपि न अवकाशः स विद्यते ।
रावण अन्तः पुरे तस्मिन् यम् कपिर् न जगाम सः ॥ ॥५-१२-१७॥
Catur aṅgula mātro api na avakāśaḥ sa vidyate । Rāvaṇa antaḥ pure tasmin yam kapir na jagāma saḥ ॥ ॥5-12-17॥
Translation
There was not even a space of four fingers breadth in that inner apartment of Ravana where the Vanara (Hanuman) did not go.

रावण के उस अन्तःपुर में चार अंगुल मात्र भी ऐसा कोई स्थान नहीं था, जहाँ वह वानर (हनुमान) न गए हों।
English Commentary
This verse emphasizes the microscopic thoroughness of Hanuman’s search. By stating that not even a space measuring "four fingers" (a traditional unit of measurement) was left unchecked, Valmiki highlights Hanuman's desperate diligence. He did not merely glance through the rooms; he inspected every nook and cranny of Ravana's seraglio. This meticulousness serves two purposes: it establishes the vastness and complexity of the palace he had to navigate, and it underscores the tragedy that despite such an exhaustive search, the object of his devotion, Sita, remained elusive. यहाँ हनुमान जी की अन्वेषण निष्ठा और सूक्ष्म दृष्टि का वर्णन किया गया है। रावण का अन्तःपुर विशाल और भूलभुलैया जैसा था, किन्तु हनुमान जी ने धैर्य नहीं खोया। "चतुर अंगुल मात्र" का प्रयोग यह दर्शाता है कि उन्होंने केवल मुख्य कक्षों को ही नहीं देखा, बल्कि हर कोने, हर छिपे हुए स्थान की गहन तलाशी ली। यह श्लोक उनके कर्तव्य के प्रति समर्पण और सीता माता को खोजने की उनकी तीव्र उत्कंठा को रेखांकित करता है। एक गुप्तचर के रूप में उनकी दक्षता यहाँ सिद्ध होती है कि उन्होंने शत्रु के भवन का चप्पा-चप्पा छान मारा, फिर भी वे पकड़े नहीं गए। यह उनकी सूक्ष्मता और गंभीरता का प्रमाण है।
