अदृष्ट्वा किम् प्रवक्ष्यामि ताम् अहम् जनक आत्मजाम् ।
ध्रुवम् प्रायम् उपेष्यन्ति कालस्य व्यतिवर्तने ॥ ॥५-१२-८॥
Adṛṣṭvā kim pravakṣyāmi tām aham janakātmajām |
Dhruvam prāyam upeṣyanti kālasya vyativartane ॥5-12-8॥
Translation
Without having seen that daughter of Janaka, what shall I say? Since the time limit has passed, they will surely undertake Prayopavesha (fasting unto death).

उस जनकनंदनी को देखे बिना मैं उनसे क्या कहूँगा? समय सीमा (मास अवधि) बीत जाने के कारण वे निश्चित रूप से 'प्रायोपवेश' (अनशन करके प्राण त्याग) कर लेंगे।
English Commentary
The consequences of failure escalate from disgrace to mass death. Hanuman calculates the chain reaction: his return without intelligence confirms failure -> the deadline is crossed -> fear of Sugriva’s punishment leads the waiting Vanaras (Angada, Jambavan, etc.) to commit Prayopavesha (ritual suicide by fasting). This is a heavy psychological burden. He realizes that the lives of the entire elite corps of the Vanara army depend solely on his eyes finding Sita. The phrase Kim pravakṣyāmi (What shall I say?) indicates that silence or a negative report is lethal. This realization is crucial for his transition from despair to renewed determination.

हनुमान जी की चिंता अब अपने प्राणों से हटकर अपने साथियों के प्राणों पर केंद्रित हो गई है। 'कालस्य व्यतिवर्तने' का अर्थ है सुग्रीव द्वारा दी गई एक माह की अवधि का समाप्त होना। सुग्रीव का आदेश था कि जो एक माह के बाद बिना सीता का पता लगाए लौटेगा, उसे मृत्युदंड मिलेगा। अतः, वानरों ने निश्चय किया था कि यदि हनुमान सफल नहीं हुए, तो वे सुग्रीव के हाथों मरने के बजाय वहीं समुद्र तट पर 'प्रायोपवेश' (अन्न-जल त्याग कर समाधिस्थ होकर प्राण त्यागना) करेंगे। हनुमान जी जानते हैं कि उनकी असफलता का परिणाम सामूहिक आत्महत्या होगा। यह एक अत्यंत भावनात्मक और गंभीर स्थिति है जो उन्हें पुनः प्रयास करने के लिए प्रेरित करती है।
