नूनं लालप्यते मन्दं पञ्जरस्था इव शारिका ।
जनकस्य कुले जाता रामपत्नी सुमध्यमा ॥ ॥५-१३-१६॥
Nūnaṃ lālapya te mandaṃ pañjarasthā iva śārikā । Janakasya kule jātā Rāma-patnī sumadhyamā ॥ ॥5-13-16॥
Translation
Born in the lineage of Janaka and the wife of Rama, the slender-waisted lady must surely be lamenting faintly like a Maina bird confined in a cage.

जनक के कुल में उत्पन्न और राम की पत्नी, वह सुंदर कटि वाली (सुमध्यमा) सीता, पिंजरे में बंद सारिका (मैना) की भाँति निश्चय ही मंद स्वर में विलाप कर रही होंगी।
English Commentary
The simile of the panjarastha sharika (caged Myna bird) encapsulates the loss of freedom and the suppression of voice. A bird is meant for the sky; Sita, a queen of solar lineage (Janaka-kula), is meant for dignity and righteousness, not imprisonment. The adjective sumadhyama (slender-waisted) highlights her delicate beauty, contrasting with the harshness of her confinement. Hanuman deduces that while she may not be dead, her vitality is ebbing away, represented by her mandam (faint/low) lamentation. It reflects a state of suspended existence—alive, but caged.

यहाँ हनुमान जी सीता जी की स्थिति की तुलना 'पञ्जरस्था शारिका' (पिंजरे में बंद मैना) से करते हैं। यह उपमा अत्यंत मार्मिक है। जिस प्रकार मैना एक मधुर भाषिणी और स्वतंत्र पक्षी है, परन्तु पिंजरे में उसकी स्वतंत्रता छिन जाती है और स्वर मंद पड़ जाता है, वही स्थिति सीता जी की है। 'जनकस्य कुले जाता' कहकर हनुमान जी उनके उच्च संस्कारों की याद दिलाते हैं, जो उन्हें आत्महत्या जैसे कदमों से रोकते हैं, और 'रामपत्नी' कहकर उनके वियोग के कारण को स्पष्ट करते हैं। 'मन्दं' (धीरे-धीरे) शब्द यह दर्शाता है कि दुख और उपवास के कारण उनकी शारीरिक शक्ति क्षीण हो चुकी है।
