सम्परिक्रम्य हनुमान् रावणस्य निवेशनान् ।
अदृष्ट्वा जानकीम् सीताम् अब्रवीद् वचनम् कपिः ॥ ॥५-१३-२॥
Samparikramya hanumān rāvaṇasya niveśanān । Adṛṣṭvā jānakīm sītām abravīd vacanam kapiḥ ॥ ॥5-13-2॥
Translation
Having gone around Ravana's dwellings and not seeing Janaki Sita, the monkey spoke these words.

रावण के निवास स्थानों की परिक्रमा (पूरी तरह छानबीन) करके और जानकी सीता को न देखकर, उस वानर ने यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This acts as a narrative bridge. Hanuman has physically completed the circuit (samparikramya) of Ravana's private quarters. The crucial result is adṛṣṭvā (not seeing) Janaki. Faced with this dead end, the narrative switches to speech (abravīd vacanam). Hanuman is about to engage in a soliloquy. In epic poetry, this signifies a moment of deep introspection where the hero processes the situation aloud, moving from observation to analysis. It sets the stage for the profound existential questioning that follows in the subsequent verses.

यह श्लोक हनुमान जी के आत्म-संवाद (monologue) की भूमिका है। उन्होंने रावण के 'निवेशनान्' (महलों/निवासों) का पूरा चक्कर लगा लिया है। 'सम्परिक्रम्य' का अर्थ है पूर्ण रूप से घूम लेना। अब, जब शारीरिक क्रिया समाप्त हो गई और परिणाम नकारात्मक रहा, तो वे अपने विचारों को शब्दों में व्यक्त करते हैं। वाल्मीकि रामायण में पात्रों के ये एकालाप उनकी मानसिक स्थिति को समझने के लिए अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण हैं। यहाँ से हनुमान जी अपनी तर्कशक्ति का प्रयोग कर भविष्य की योजना और अपनी विफलता के कारणों पर विचार करेंगे।
