गमिष्यामि ततः को मे पुरुषार्थो भविष्यति ।
ममेदं लङ्घनं व्यर्थं सागरस्य भविष्यति ॥ ॥५-१३-२१॥
Gamiṣyāmi tataḥ ko me puruṣārtho bhaviṣyati । Mama idaṃ laṅghanaṃ vyarthaṃ sāgarasya bhaviṣyati ॥ ॥5-13-21॥
Translation
"...then what will be the value of my purpose/effort? This crossing of the ocean by me will become futile."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"...तो मेरा पुरुषार्थ (प्रयत्न) क्या रहा? (अर्थात् सब बेकार)। मेरा यह सागर-लंघन (समुद्र को लांघना) भी व्यर्थ हो जायेगा।"
English Commentary
Hanuman questions the utility of his monumental feat. Purushartha here refers to human effort and the goal of that effort. If the objective (finding Sita) is not met, the means (crossing the ocean), no matter how spectacular, are rendered vyartham (useless). This reflects a high standard of accountability. Hanuman does not seek glory for the jump itself; he values it only as a means to serve Rama. Without the result, the action loses its meaning to him.
हिंदी टीका
हनुमान जी को अपने 'पुरुषार्थ' (प्रयत्न/उपलब्धि) के व्यर्थ होने का भय है। एक कर्मयोगी के लिए कर्म की सार्थकता उसके परिणाम (लक्ष्य प्राप्ति) में है। यद्यपि गीता में निष्काम कर्म की बात है, परन्तु यहाँ संदर्भ 'सेवा' और 'दूत-कार्य' का है, जहाँ लक्ष्य (सीता की खोज) ही प्रधान है। 100 योजन समुद्र लांघने जैसा असाधारण कार्य भी यदि सीता की सुध न ला सके, तो वह 'व्यर्थं' (बेकार) है। यह आत्म-ग्लानि (Self-reproach) की भावना है जो महान व्यक्तियों में असफलता की आशंका मात्र से उत्पन्न होती है।
