भरतं च मृतं दृष्ट्वा शत्रुघ्नो न भविष्यति ।
पुत्रान् मृतान् समीक्ष्याथ न भविष्यन्ति मातरः ॥ ॥५-१३-२७॥
Bharataṃ ca mṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā Śatrughno na bhaviṣyati । Putrān mṛtān samīkṣya atha na bhaviṣyanti mātaraḥ ॥ ॥5-13-27॥
Translation
"Seeing Bharata dead, Shatrughna will not survive. And thereafter, seeing their sons dead, the mothers will not survive."

"भरत को मरा हुआ देखकर शत्रुघ्न भी जीवित नहीं रहेंगे। और (अपने) पुत्रों को मृत देखकर माताएं (कौशल्या, सुमित्रा, कैकेयी) भी नहीं बचेंगी।"
English Commentary
The total annihilation of the royal family is the conclusion of Hanuman's simulation. Shatrughna follows Bharata, and finally, the Queen Mothers, witnessing the death of all four sons (putran mritan), will perish. The plural matarah indicates the collective grief of Kausalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi. Hanuman realizes that his failed mission equals the genocide of the Raghu lineage. This overwhelming burden of guilt and responsibility forces him to decide that death (or staying in Lanka) is preferable to returning with bad news.

विनाश का यह चक्र अंतिम चरण में पहुँचता है। भरत के प्राण त्यागने पर शत्रुघ्न (जो भरत के प्रति अनुरक्त हैं) भी देह त्याग देंगे। अंत में, चारों पुत्रों की मृत्यु देखकर 'मातरः' (माताएं—कौशल्या, सुमित्रा और कैकेयी) भी जीवित नहीं रह सकेंगी। इस प्रकार, हनुमान जी निष्कर्ष निकालते हैं कि उनके एक "न" (सीता नहीं मिलीं) कहने से इक्ष्वाकु वंश का समूल नाश हो जाएगा। यह विचार उन्हें किष्किन्धा लौटने से रोकता है। यही वह क्षण है जो उन्हें आत्महत्या के विचार की ओर धकेलता है, जिसे वे बाद में त्याग देंगे।
