आशया तौ धरिष्येते वनराः च मनस्विनः ।
हस्त आदानो मुख आदानो नियतो वृक्ष मूलिकः ॥५-१३-४०॥
āśayā tau dhariṣyete vanarāḥ ca manasvinaḥ |
hasta ādāno mukha ādāno niyato vṛkṣa mūlikaḥ ॥5-13-40॥
Translation
Those two (Rama and Lakshmana) and the high-minded Vanaras will sustain their lives clinging to hope (of my return). (However, I shall stay here) living at the root of a tree, self-restrained, eating only with my hands and mouth.

मेरी वापसी की आशा में वे दोनों (श्री राम और लक्ष्मण) और अन्य मनस्वी वानर अपने प्राण धारण किये रहेंगे। (परन्तु मैं वहां नहीं जाऊंगा, अपितु यहाँ) वृक्ष की जड़ में रहते हुए, इंद्रियों को वश में कर, हाथ और मुख से ही आहार ग्रहण करते हुए जीवन व्यतीत करूँगा।
English Commentary
This verse captures a profound psychological dilemma within Hanuman. He is navigating a crisis of purpose and duty. He realizes that his return without Mother Sita would be the catalyst for the death of Rama, Lakshmana, and the Vanaras. Conversely, his absence maintains their 'hope,' which, though potentially false, keeps them alive. Thus, strictly out of compassion and loyalty, he contemplates engaging in a self-imposed exile rather than delivering fatal news. The phrase "hasta ādāno mukha ādāno" (taking with hand, taking with mouth) signifies the most primitive form of asceticism, renouncing even the basic comfort of utensils. He envisions a life of extreme penance, grounded at the root of a tree. This reveals Hanuman's selflessness; he is willing to endure a solitary, animal-like existence in enemy territory to prolong the lives of his master and kin, preferring his own suffering over becoming the bearer of hopelessness.

यह श्लोक हनुमान जी के मानसिक द्वंद्व और विषाद की चरम सीमा को दर्शाता है। यहाँ हनुमान जी एक कठिन नैतिक संकट का सामना कर रहे हैं। वे सोचते हैं कि यदि वे असफल होकर किष्किन्धा लौटते हैं, तो उनके स्वामी और मित्र दुःख से मर जायेंगे। इसलिए, वे निर्णय लेते हैं कि लौटना ही नहीं उचित है। वे सोचते हैं कि जब तक वे नहीं लौटेंगे, तब तक राम, लक्ष्मण और वानर इस 'आशा' में जीवित रहेंगे कि हनुमान सीता को ढूँढ कर आयेंगे। यह 'आशा' ही उनका जीवन आधार होगी। दूसरी ओर, हनुमान स्वयं वानप्रस्थ जैसा जीवन जीने का संकल्प करते हैं। 'हस्त आदानो मुख आदानो' का अर्थ है अत्यंत सादगीपूर्ण जीवन, जहाँ भोजन पकाने या परोसने के पात्र का भी त्याग कर दिया जाता है; जैसे पशु मुख से खाते हैं या साधु हाथ में लेकर, वैसे ही वे निर्वाह करेंगे। यह उनके त्याग और असफलता के भारी बोझ को व्यक्त करता है, जहाँ वे अपने प्रियजनों को दुःख देने के बजाय स्वयं अज्ञातवास में कष्ट सहना बेहतर समझते हैं।
