वानप्रस्थो भविष्यामि अदृष्ट्वा जनक आत्मजाम् ।
सागर अनूपजे देशे बहु मूल फल उदके ॥५-१३-४१॥
vānaprastho bhaviṣyāmi adṛṣṭvā janaka ātmajām |
sāgara anūpaje deśe bahu mūla phala udake ॥5-13-41॥
Translation
Without having seen the daughter of Janaka, I shall become a hermit (Vanaprastha) in this marshy region near the ocean, which abounds in roots, fruits, and water.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जनकनन्दिनी सीता को देखे बिना, मैं सागर के किनारे इस जल-प्राय (अनूप) देश में, जहाँ कंद, मूल, फल और जल की प्रचुरता है, वानप्रस्थी बनकर रहूँगा।
English Commentary
Hanuman elaborates on his contingency plan for failure. The term 'Vanaprastha' usually refers to the third stage of Vedic life (retirement into the forest), but here it implies a self-imposed exile due to the shame of mission failure. By referring to Sita as 'Janaka ātmajām' (Janaka’s daughter), he underscores the gravity of losing such a noble personality. He pragmatically chooses a location—the marshy distinct ('anūpa') near the ocean—where survival is possible due to the abundance of natural resources. This highlights a critical aspect of Hanuman's character: even in absolute despair, his mind remains logical regarding survival. He is caught in a moral conflict; returning empty-handed is seen as a betrayal of trust, yet ending his life is a sin. Thus, living as a hermit represents a middle ground of penance and self-punishment for his perceived inability to serve Lord Rama.

यहाँ हनुमान जी अपने संकल्प को और अधिक स्पष्ट करते हैं। सीता जी की खोज में असफल होने पर वे गृहस्थ या योद्धा का जीवन त्याग कर 'वानप्रस्थ' आश्रम स्वीकार करने की बात कर रहे हैं। 'जनक आत्मजाम्' (जनक की पुत्री) शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ सीता जी की कुलीनता और उनके महत्त्व को रेखांकित करता है, जिनके बिना हनुमान का जीवन उद्देश्यहीन है। वे लंका के पास ही समुद्र तटीय क्षेत्र (अनूप देश) में रहने का विचार करते हैं क्योंकि वहाँ जीवन निर्वाह के लिए आवश्यक कंद-मूल सुलभ हैं। यह श्लोक यह भी दर्शाता है कि हनुमान जी आत्महत्या के विचार और संन्यास के विचार के बीच झूल रहे हैं। आत्महत्या का विचार पापमय हो सकता है, इसलिए वे वानप्रस्थ बनकर प्रायश्चित करने का मार्ग भी सोच रहे हैं। यह उनकी कर्तव्यनिष्ठा का प्रमाण है कि कार्य सिद्ध न होने पर वे समाज में मुख दिखाने के योग्य स्वयं को नहीं मानते।
