चिताम् कृत्वा प्रवेक्ष्यामि समिद्धम् अरणी सुतम् ।
उपविष्टस्य वा सम्यग् लिन्गिनम् साधयिष्यतः ॥५-१३-४२॥
citām kṛtvā pravekṣyāmi samiddham araṇī sutam |
upaviṣṭasya vā samyag linginam sādhayiṣyataḥ ॥5-13-42॥
Translation
Or else, having built a pyre, I shall enter the blazing fire (son of Arani). Or, I shall sit in a proper posture and fast to death, accomplishing the exit of the soul from the body.

अथवा मैं चिता तैयार करके प्रज्वलित अग्नि (अरणी सुत) में प्रवेश कर जाऊँगा। या फिर, उपवास (प्रायोपवेश) का आसन लगाकर समाधिस्थ हो जाऊँगा और शरीर का त्याग कर दूँगा।
English Commentary
This verse marks a darker descent into despondency, where Hanuman moves from thoughts of exile to thoughts of suicide. He uses the poetic epithet 'Arani sutam' (Son of the Arani fire-sticks) for fire, indicating a ritualistic context even in his contemplation of death. He considers two traditional exits: immolation upon a pyre, akin to a warrior or ascetic offering themselves to Agni, or 'Prayopavesha' (fasting to death). The latter is a dignified, non-violent exit practiced by sages. The phrase 'linginam sādhayiṣyataḥ' refers to the separation of the subtle body from the gross body. By weighing these specific, scripturally sanctioned methods of death, Hanuman reveals that even his despair is disciplined. He does not consider a cowardly escape, but a ritualistic termination of a life he feels has failed its divine purpose.

विषाद के गहरे क्षणों में हनुमान जी मृत्यु के विभिन्न मार्गों पर विचार करते हैं। यहाँ 'अरणी सुत' अग्नि के लिए एक वैदिक और पवित्र विशेषण है, क्योंकि वैदिक यज्ञों में अरणी मंथन से अग्नि उत्पन्न की जाती है। अग्नि में प्रवेश करना (आत्मदाह) एक वीर या सती के लिए सम्मानजनक मृत्यु मानी जाती थी। दूसरा विकल्प जो वे सोचते हैं, वह है 'प्रायोपवेश' या अनशन, जो ऋषियों और तपस्वियों द्वारा शरीर त्यागने की एक स्वीकृत विधि है। 'लिन्गिनम् साधयिष्यतः' का अर्थ है जीवात्मा को शरीर से अलग करना। यह श्लोक दिखाता है कि हनुमान जी के लिए राम का कार्य ही उनके जीवन का एकमात्र उद्देश्य है। उस उद्देश्य की पूर्ति के बिना, वे अपने शरीर को निरर्थक मानते हैं और उसे त्यागने के लिए शास्त्रीय विधियों का स्मरण कर रहे हैं। यह उनकी गहन हताशा का परिचायक है।
