प्रभग्ना चिर रात्री इयम् मम सीताम् अपश्यतः ।
तापसो वा भविष्यामि नियतो वृक्ष मूलिकः ॥५-१३-४५॥
prabhagnā cira rātrī iyam mama sītām apaśyataḥ |
tāpaso vā bhaviṣyāmi niyato vṛkṣa mūlikaḥ ॥5-13-45॥
Translation
This long night has passed in vain for me, who has not seen Sita. Or rather, I shall become an ascetic, self-controlled, living at the foot of a tree.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सीता को न देख पाने के कारण मेरी यह लंबी रात्रि व्यर्थ ही बीत गई। (अतः) मैं इंद्रियों को वश में करके वृक्ष के मूल में रहने वाला तपस्वी बन जाऊँगा।
English Commentary
This verse conveys Hanuman's frustration with the passage of time. The "long night" refers to both the actual night spent searching Lanka and the metaphorical darkness of his failed mission. He feels his efforts have been 'prabhagnā' (shattered/wasted) because the objective was not met. Interestingly, the verse shows his mind cycling back from the extreme of suicide to the alternative of asceticism (tāpaso vā bhaviṣyāmi). This oscillation is characteristic of high anxiety and grief. He reiterates the idea of living at the foot of a tree, suggesting that while the impulse to destroy his body (suicide) comes in waves, the resolve to exile himself (social death) is a more constant baseline in his current mental state. He cannot bear to face the daylight of failure.

यहाँ हनुमान जी को समय के व्यर्थ बीत जाने का गहरा अफ़सोस हो रहा है। वे लंका में रात भर घूमे, परन्तु सीता नहीं मिलीं। 'चिर रात्री' (लंबी रात) न केवल भौतिक रात का प्रतीक है, बल्कि उनकी निराशा के अंधकार का भी प्रतीक है। 'प्रभग्ना' का अर्थ है जो टूट गयी हो या व्यर्थ हो गयी हो। जैसे ही आत्महत्या का आवेश थोड़ा कम होता है, उनका मन पुनः संन्यास की ओर लौटता है। वे कहते हैं 'तापसो वा भविष्यामि' (या फिर मैं तपस्वी बन जाऊँगा)। यह श्लोक हनुमान जी के मन की चंचलता और अस्थिरता को दिखाता है जो विषाद योग का लक्षण है। वे कभी मरने की सोचते हैं, कभी तपस्वी बनने की। वृक्ष के नीचे रहने का विचार पुनः इस बात की पुष्टि करता है कि वे लौटना नहीं चाहते।
