न इतः प्रतिगमिष्यामि ताम् अदृष्ट्वा असित ईक्षणाम् ।

उस काले नेत्रों वाली (सीता) को देखे बिना मैं यहाँ से वापस नहीं जाऊँगा। यदि मैं उस सीता को पाए बिना यहाँ से वापस जाता हूँ... (तो सब अनर्थ हो जायेगा)।
English Commentary
Here, Hanuman makes a definitive vow. The vacillation between life and death pauses for a moment of resolute refusal: "I shall not return." He addresses Sita as asita īkṣaṇām (the dark-eyed one), a classical description of beauty, reminding himself of the person worth this extreme dedication. The syntax creates suspense ("If I return...") setting up the consequences described in the next verse. This reflects the warrior code where returning from a mission without success is worse than death. It establishes the boundary of his integrity; he acts as a dam holding back the grief that would flood Ayodhya and Kishkindha. He decides that the burden of failure must stop with him, right here in Lanka, and not be carried back home.

यह श्लोक हनुमान जी के दृढ़ संकल्प का उद्घोष है। वे अपने मन को स्थिर कर रहे हैं। 'असित ईक्षणाम्' (काले नेत्रों वाली) सीता के सौंदर्य और उनकी कोमलता का स्मरण कराता है। यहाँ वाक्य अधूरा सा लगता है, जिसका पूर्ण अर्थ अगले श्लोक में स्पष्ट होता है, परन्तु भाव यह है कि 'वापसी' कोई विकल्प नहीं है। हनुमान जी ने यह तय कर लिया है कि 'खोज' और 'मृत्यु/संन्यास' के बीच में 'घर वापसी' का कोई रास्ता नहीं है। यह क्षत्रिय धर्म और सेवक धर्म की पराकाष्ठा है—'कार्यं वा साधयेयं देहं वा पातयेयम्' (या तो कार्य सिद्ध करूँगा या देह त्याग दूँगा)। यह श्लोक उनकी निष्ठा को परिभाषित करता है कि वे खाली हाथ लौटकर अपने स्वामी को मुख नहीं दिखाएंगे।
