उपवास कृशाम् दीनाम् निह्श्वसन्तीम् पुनः पुनः ।
ददर्श शुक्ल पक्ष आदौ चन्द्र रेखाम् इव अमलाम् ॥ ॥५-१५-१९॥
upavāsa kṛśām dīnām nihśvasantīm punaḥ punaḥ |
dadarśa śukla pakṣa ādau candra rekhām iva amalām ॥5-15-19॥
Translation
He saw her, emaciated due to fasting, looking miserable, and sighing repeatedly. She was pure (amala) like the crescent moon on the first day of the bright fortnight.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(हनुमान जी ने उन्हें देखा) जो उपवास के कारण दुबली हो गई थीं, दीन दिखाई दे रही थीं, और बार-बार लंबी साँसें ले रही थीं। वे शुक्ल पक्ष की प्रतिपदा (आरंभ) की चंद्रमा की रेखा के समान (क्षीण परन्तु) अमल (पवित्र) थीं।
English Commentary
This verse captures the essence of Sita's physical and spiritual state. Physically, she is kṛśām (withered) from fasting and dīnām (wretched/sad). However, the simile used is profoundly hopeful: śukla pakṣa ādau candra rekhām (the moon streak at the beginning of the waxing phase). Unlike the waning moon which leads to darkness, the waxing crescent implies that although she is currently faint and barely visible, she possesses innate purity (amalām) and is destined to wax into fullness/glory again.

यह रामायण के सबसे प्रसिद्ध उपमाओं में से एक है। सीता 'उपवास कृशाम्' (व्रत से दुर्बल) हैं। 'निह्श्वसन्तीम् पुनः पुनः' (बार-बार दीर्घ निश्वास छोड़ती हुई) उनकी मानसिक पीड़ा को दर्शाता है। परन्तु कवि उन्हें 'शुक्ल पक्ष आदौ चन्द्र रेखाम्' कहते हैं। जैसे दूज का चाँद बहुत पतला होता है, मुश्किल से दिखता है, लेकिन वह 'अमल' (दोष रहित) होता है और उसमें बढ़ने (पूर्ण होने) की क्षमता होती है। यह संकेत है कि सीता का यह दुख अस्थायी है, उनका तेज फिर से पूर्ण होगा।
