Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मन्द प्रख्यायमानेन रूपेण रुचिर प्रभाम् ।
पिनद्धाम् धूम जालेन शिखाम् इव विभावसोः ॥ ॥५-१५-२०॥
manda prakhyāyamānena rūpeṇa rucira prabhām |
pinaddhām dhūma jālena śikhām iva vibhāvasoḥ ॥5-15-20॥
Translation
Her beauty was being revealed only faintly, yet she possessed a pleasing radiance. She looked like a flame of fire enveloped by a cloud of smoke.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनका रूप बहुत कम प्रकट हो रहा था (मन्द प्रख्यायमान), फिर भी उनकी कांति रुचिर (सुंदर) थी। वे धुएँ के समूह से ढकी हुई अग्नि (विभावसु) की ज्वाला (शिखा) के समान लग रही थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses the metaphor of fire (vibhāvasoḥ śikhām) to describe Sita. She is wrapped in dhūma jālena (a net/web of smoke). This implies that her inherent brilliance (rucira prabhām) is obscured by her circumstances (dirt, grief, captivity), just as smoke obscures a flame. However, the choice of 'fire' suggests that beneath the layer of grime and sorrow, there is immense power and purity that remains untouched.

यहाँ सीता के तेज की तुलना 'अग्नि शिखा' (fire flame) से की गई है। उनका सौंदर्य नष्ट नहीं हुआ है, केवल 'पिनद्धाम्' (ढका हुआ/छिपा हुआ) है। जैसे धुआँ आग की चमक को धुंधला कर देता है पर उसकी गर्मी और अस्तित्व को नहीं मिटा सकता, वैसे ही दुख और मैल ने सीता के बाहरी रूप को धुंधला कर दिया है, पर उनका आंतरिक सतीत्व और सौंदर्य अग्नि की तरह ही पवित्र और दाहक है।
