सन्तान कलताभिः च पादपैर् उपशोभिताम् ।
दिव्य गन्ध रस उपेताम् सर्वतः समलम्कृताम् ॥ ॥५-१५-२॥
santāna kalatābhiḥ ca pādapair upaśobhitām |
divya gandha rasa upetām sarvataḥ samalamkṛtām ॥5-15-2॥
Translation
(He saw the ground) adorned with Santana creepers and trees, endowed with divine fragrances and juices, and decorated on all sides.

(उन्होंने उस भूमि को देखा) जो संतानक लताओं और वृक्षों से सुशोभित थी, दिव्य गंध और रसों से युक्त थी, और सब ओर से भली-भांति सजाई गई थी।
English Commentary
This verse describes the floor of the Ashoka grove as seen from Hanuman's hiding spot. The mention of Santāna creepers is significant; in mythology, Santāna is one of the five divine trees of Indra's paradise (Nandanaavana), suggesting Ravana has looted the heavens to adorn his estate. The grove possesses divya gandha (celestial fragrance) and is samalamkṛtām (well-decorated/ornamented), implying a manicured, almost supernatural garden. The lushness described here sets the stage for the appearance of Sita, contrasting her impending sorrowful figure against a backdrop of divine luxury.

हनुमान जी वृक्ष से नीचे जो देख रहे हैं, उसका वर्णन है। 'संतानक' देवलोक के कल्पवृक्ष की एक प्रजाति मानी जाती है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि रावण ने स्वर्ग को लूटकर अपनी वाटिका सजाई है। 'दिव्य गंध' (अलौकिक सुगंध) इस बात की पुष्टि करती है कि यह कोई साधारण वन नहीं है। 'सर्वतः समलंकृताम्' (सब ओर से सजी हुई) से पता चलता है कि यह वन प्राकृतिक कम और कृत्रिम रूप से सुसज्जित (landscaped) अधिक है। यह सुंदरता सीता के दुख के लिए एक क्रूर पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करती है।
