नील नाग आभया वेण्या जघनम् गतया एकया ।
नीलया नीरदापाये वनराज्या महीमिव ॥ ॥५-१५-२५॥
nīla nāga ābhayā veṇyā jaghanam gatayā ekayā |
nīlayā nīradāpāye vanarājyā mahīmiva ॥5-15-25॥
Translation
With a single braid resembling a black serpent falling on her hips, she looked like the earth covered with dark green forests at the end of the rainy season.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनकी एक लंबी वेणी (चोटी) काले साँप की आभा वाली थी और उनके जघन (hips/back) तक लटक रही थी। उससे वे वैसी लग रही थीं जैसे वर्षा ऋतु के बीत जाने पर (नीरदापाये) गहरे हरे वनों (वनराजि) से युक्त धरती लगती है।
English Commentary
The ekayā veṇyā (single braid) is a cultural symbol of a woman whose husband is away; she has taken a vow of neglect regarding her grooming. Comparing the braid to a nīla nāga (black cobra) implies a latent power or danger—her virtue is a coiled snake ready to strike if violated. The comparison to the earth (mahīm) at the end of the monsoon (nīradāpāye) suggests a dark, lush, but solemn beauty. Just as the earth is dark with dense vegetation after rain, Sita is darkened by grief yet vibrant with life.

'एकया वेण्या' (एक वेणी) का विशेष महत्व है। प्रोषितपतिका नायिका (जिसका पति दूर हो) अपने बालों को सवारती नहीं है और उन्हें एक ही लट में बांध लेती है जब तक पति न लौटे। इसे 'वेणी-संहार' का प्रतीक भी माना जाता है। इसकी तुलना 'नील नाग' (काला साँप) से करना यह बताता है कि यह वेणी रावण के लिए मृत्युदंड समान हो सकती है। दूसरी उपमा 'नीरदापाये' (बादलों के जाने पर) धरती की है, जो सीता की श्यामल आभा और गंभीरता को दर्शाती है।
