Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सीताम् पद्म पलाश अक्षीम् मन्मथस्य रतिम् यथा ।
इष्टाम् सर्वस्य जगतः पूर्ण चन्द्र प्रभाम् इव ॥५-१५-३०॥
sītām padma palāśa akṣīm manmathasya ratim yathā । iṣṭām sarvasya jagataḥ pūrṇa candra prabhām iva ॥ ॥5-15-30॥
Translation
Sita, whose eyes were like lotus petals, appeared like Rati (consort of the God of Love). She was dear to the whole world, just like the light of the full moon.
हिंदी अनुवाद
कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान नेत्रों वाली सीता, कामदेव की पत्नी रति के समान प्रतीत होती थीं। वे समस्त जगत को पूर्ण चंद्रमा की प्रभा (चांदनी) के समान प्रिय थीं।
English Commentary
The poet uses high similes here. Comparing her eyes to lotus petals suggests purity and divinity. The comparison to Rati underscores her unsurpassed beauty, yet the qualifier that she is "dear to the whole world like moonlight" elevates her beauty beyond the sensual to the universal and reverential. Just as moonlight is universally beloved and soothing, Sita’s presence is auspicious for all beings, highlighting the tragedy of her isolation in Lanka.

यहाँ सीता जी की तुलना 'रति' से की गई है, जो रूप की पराकाष्ठा है, किन्तु सीता जी का सौंदर्य रति से भी अधिक पूजनीय है क्योंकि वे 'सर्वस्य जगतः इष्टाम्' (सारे जगत को प्रिय) हैं। जैसे चांदनी सबको शीतलता देती है और किसी से भेदभाव नहीं करती, वैसे ही सीता जी का व्यक्तित्व जगत-कल्याणकारी है। 'पद्म पलाश अक्षीम्' सात्विकता और पवित्रता का द्योतक है। यह उपमाएँ राम के विरह में उनकी दयनीय स्थिति के साथ विरोधाभास (contrast) उत्पन्न करती हैं।
