Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
भूमौ सुतनुम् आसीनाम् नियताम् इव तापसीम् ।
निःश्वास बहुलाम् भीरुम् भुजग इन्द्र वधूम् इव ॥५-१५-३१॥
bhūmau sutanum āsīnām niyatām iva tāpasīm । niḥśvāsa bahulām bhīrum bhujaga indra vadhūm iva ॥ ॥5-15-31॥
Translation
That slender-bodied lady was seated on the bare ground, like an ascetic observing vows. She was sighing heavily and appeared fearful, resembling the bride of the King of Serpents.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह सुंदरी भूमि पर बैठी थीं, मानो कोई तपस्विनी नियम में बंधी हो। वे बहुत अधिक आहें भर रही थीं और नागराज की वधू के समान भयभीत (और संकुचित) थीं।
English Commentary
The imagery shifts from her beauty to her pitiable condition. Sitting on the bare ground indicates her rejection of Ravana's luxuries and her strict adherence to ascetic vows (tāpasīm). The simile of the "bride of the Serpent King" (Bhujagendra vadhum) is evocative; it suggests a creature that is naturally graceful and powerful but is currently hissing (sighing) in distress, perhaps trapped or deprived of its jewel. It captures her grace mixed with intense anxiety.

इस श्लोक में सीता जी की वर्तमान अवस्था का मार्मिक चित्रण है। राजमहल की सुख-सुविधाओं की अभ्यस्त होते हुए भी वे 'भूमौ आसीनाम्' (जमीन पर बैठी) हैं। 'तापसीम्' शब्द सूचित करता है कि उन्होंने स्वेच्छा से भोगों का त्याग कर संयम का जीवन अपनाया है। 'भुजग इन्द्र वधूम् इव' (नागिन के समान) की उपमा अत्यंत सुंदर है—जैसे मणि छिन जाने पर नागिन लम्बी सांसे लेती है और दीन-हीन हो जाती है, वैसे ही राम रूपी मणि से दूर होकर सीता जी की दशा है।
