शोक जालेन महता विततेन न राजतीम् ।
सम्सक्ताम् धूम जालेन शिखाम् इव विभावसोः ॥५-१५-३२॥
śoka jālena mahatā vitatena na rājatīm । samsaktām dhūma jālena śikhām iva vibhāvasoḥ ॥ ॥5-15-32॥
Translation
She was not shining efficiently, being enveloped by a great, spreading web of sorrow, just like a flame of fire shrouded by a web of smoke.

वे विस्तृत और महान शोक-जाल से घिरी होने के कारण सुशोभित नहीं हो रही थीं, जैसे धुएं के समूह से ढकी हुई अग्नि की शिखा सुशोभित नहीं होती।
English Commentary
This is a masterclass in metaphor. Sita is compared to a flame of fire (vibhāvasoḥ śikhām). Fire represents purity and latent power. However, she is currently obscured by smoke (dhūma), representing sorrow (śoka). The key theological and poetic point is that smoke cannot extinguish fire; it only temporarily veils it. This implies that Sita’s inner strength and chastity remain intact beneath the layer of grief, waiting for the "wind" of hope (Hanuman) to clear the smoke.

यह रामायण की प्रसिद्ध उपमाओं में से एक है। सीता 'अग्नि शिखा' हैं—पवित्र, तेजपूर्ण और स्पर्श न करने योग्य। परन्तु जैसे धुआं अग्नि की चमक को धुंधला कर देता है, वैसे ही 'शोक' ने उनकी चमक को छिपा दिया है। ध्यान दें कि धुआं अग्नि को 'बुझा' नहीं सकता, केवल 'छिपा' सकता है। अर्थात, सीता का तेज नष्ट नहीं हुआ है, केवल वर्तमान परिस्थितियों (शोक) के कारण अदृश्य प्राय है। 'जाल' शब्द का प्रयोग शोक की व्यापकता को दर्शाता है।
