ताम् स्मृतीम् इव सम्दिघ्दाम् ऋद्धिम् निपतिताम् इव ।
विहताम् इव च श्रद्धाम् आशाम् प्रतिहताम् इव ॥५-१५-३३॥
tām smṛtīm iva samdighdām ṛddhim nipatitām iva । vihatām iva ca śraddhām āśām pratihatām iva ॥ ॥5-15-33॥
Translation
She appeared like a memory that is doubtful, like prosperity that has fallen, like faith that has been violated, and like hope that has been dashed.

वह (सीता) संदिग्ध स्मृति के समान, गिरी हुई समृद्धि के समान, खंडित श्रद्धा के समान और हताश हुई आशा के समान प्रतीत हो रही थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses four powerful abstract similes here to describe Sita's diminished state. She is like a "doubtful memory" (smṛtīm iva samdighdām)—hazy and hard to grasp. She is like "fallen prosperity," "shattered faith," and "frustrated hope." These comparisons elevate the description from physical to psychological and spiritual. They reflect the violation of Dharma that her abduction represents—she is the embodiment of Faith and Hope that has been brutally assaulted by Adharma.

यहाँ अमूर्त (Abstract) उपमाओं की झड़ी है। 'स्मृतीम् इव सम्दिघ्दाम्'—जैसे बहुत पुरानी बात याद करने पर धुंधली लगती है, वैसे ही क्लेश के कारण सीता को पहचानना कठिन हो रहा है। 'विहताम् श्रद्धाम्'—जैसे किसी पवित्र कार्य में विघ्न पड़ने पर श्रद्धा को चोट पहुँचती है, वैसे ही रावण के स्पर्श-दोष (अपहरण) से सीता रूपी श्रद्धा आहत हुई है। यह श्लोक हनुमान के मन की उलझन और सीता की दयनीयता दोनों को एक साथ व्यक्त करता है।
