Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्य सम्दिदिहे बुद्धिः मुहुः सीताम् निरीक्ष्य तु ।
आम्नायानाम् अयोगेन विद्याम् प्रशिथिलाम् इव ॥५-१५-३८॥
tasya samdidihe buddhiḥ muhuḥ sītām nirīkṣya tu । āmnāyānām ayogena vidyām praśithilām iva ॥ ॥5-15-38॥
Translation
Observing Sita, his (Hanuman's) mind doubted momentarily, just as knowledge of the Vedas becomes weak (or fades) due to lack of practice/recitation.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सीता को देखकर हनुमान की बुद्धि बार-बार संदेह में पड़ जाती थी, जैसे अभ्यास (योग) के अभाव में वेदों की विद्या (ज्ञान) शिथिल (विस्मृत/धुंधली) हो जाती है।
English Commentary
This contains one of the most profound similes in the Ramayana. Hanuman doubts his recognition because Sita looks so different. The poet compares this to Vidyā (Vedic knowledge) becoming praśithilām (loose/weak) due to āmnāyānām ayogena (lack of repetitive practice/recitation). Just as knowledge is not destroyed but becomes latent without practice, Sita’s glorious form is not destroyed but has faded without the "yoga" (union) with Rama. It implies that with the return of Rama (like the resumption of recitation), her glory will be fully restored.

यह सुंदरकाण्ड का अत्यंत गूढ़ और दार्शनिक श्लोक है। हनुमान जी को सीता को पहचानने में कठिनाई क्यों हुई? इसके लिए वाल्मीकि जी ने अद्भुत उपमा दी है। जैसे वेद मंत्रों का निरंतर पाठ (आम्नाय/योग) न करने से वे विस्मृत होने लगते हैं, वैसे ही राम के सान्निध्य (योग) के बिना सीता की कांति क्षीण हो गई है। किन्तु, जैसे पाठ करने पर विद्या पुनः लौट आती है, वैसे ही राम का योग होते ही सीता पुनः खिल उठेंगी। विद्या नष्ट नहीं होती, केवल 'प्रशिथिल' (ढीली/weak) होती है; वैसे ही सीता का सतीत्व अक्षुण्ण है।
