कान्चन उत्पल पद्माभिः वापीभिः उपशोभिताम् ।
बह्व आसन कुथा उपेताम् बहु भूमि गृह आयुताम् ॥ ॥५-१५-४॥
kāncana utpala padmābhiḥ vāpībhiḥ upaśobhitām |
bahva āsana kuthā upetām bahu bhūmi gṛha āyutām ॥5-15-4॥
Translation
It was adorned with oblong ponds containing golden lotuses and lilies. It was furnished with many seats and carpets, and replete with many subterranean houses (grottos).

वह वाटिका सुनहरे कमलों और उत्पलों (नीलकमल) वाली बावड़ियों (वापी) से सुशोभित थी। वहां बहुत से आसन और कालीन बिछे थे, और अनेक भूमि-गृह (तहखाने/गुफाएं) बने हुए थे।
English Commentary

यहाँ रावण के विलास का सूक्ष्म वर्णन है। 'कांचन उत्पल' (स्वर्ण कमल) रावण की अपार संपत्ति और प्रकृति के नियमों को बदलने की उसकी शक्ति (कृत्रिम या जादुई निर्माण) को दर्शाते हैं। 'बह्व आसन कुथा' (अनेक आसन और कालीन) यह बताते हैं कि यह स्थान विश्राम और रति-क्रीड़ा के लिए तैयार किया गया है। 'भूमि गृह' (underground chambers) का उल्लेख रोचक है; ये गर्मी से बचने के लिए या एकांत के लिए बनाए गए कृत्रिम गुफा-नुमा कक्ष हैं। यह पूरी संरचना इन्द्रिय-सुख (sensory pleasure) के लिए रची गई है।
