Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रामस्य व्यवसायज्ञा लक्ष्मणस्य च धीमतः ।
न अत्यर्थम् क्षुभ्यते देवी गन्गा इव जलद आगमे ॥५-१६-४॥
rāmasya vyavasāyajñā lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ । na atyartham kṣubhyate devī gangā iva jalada āgame ॥ ॥5-16-4॥
Translation
She knows the resolve of Rama and the wisdom of Lakshmana; therefore, the Devi does not become excessively agitated (does not lose her bounds), just like the Ganga during the rainy season.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह (सीता) राम के निश्चय (उद्योग) को और बुद्धिमान लक्ष्मण (के स्वभाव) को जानती हैं, इसीलिए वे वर्षा ऋतू में गंगा की भाँति (किनारों को लांघकर) अत्यंत क्षुब्ध नहीं होतीं (प्राण त्यागने जैसा अमर्यादित कार्य नहीं करतीं)।
English Commentary
The simile compares Sita to the River Ganga. While the Ganga swells during the monsoon (jalada āgame), she remains the holy river flowing towards the ocean. Similarly, Sita is filled with the flood of grief, yet she does not become atyartham kṣubhyate (excessively agitated to the point of self-destruction). Why? Because she is vyavasāyajñā—she knows Rama's unyielding resolve. Her faith acts as the riverbank that contains the flood of her sorrow.
हिंदी टीका
इस श्लोक की उपमा 'गन्गा इव जलद आगमे' थोड़ी गूढ़ है। वर्षा में गंगा उफनती है, क्षुब्ध होती है। यहाँ अर्थ यह है कि जैसे गंगा वर्षा का अपार जल पाकर भी अपनी मर्यादा (सागर में मिलने का लक्ष्य) नहीं छोड़ती, वैसे ही सीता अपार दुःख (वर्षा) पाकर भी विचलित होकर आत्महत्या जैसा कदम नहीं उठा रही हैं। वे 'व्यवसायज्ञा' हैं—जानती हैं कि राम आएंगे और उनका उद्धार करेंगे। यह उनका धैर्य है।
