अतिनासाश्च तिर्यङ्नासा अनासिकाः ।
गजनन्निभनासाश्च ललाटोच्च्वासनासिकाः ।
।

atināsāśca tiryaṅnāsā anāsikāḥ |
gajanannibhanāsāśca lalāṭoccvāsanāsikāḥ ॥5-17-12॥
Translation
Some had huge noses, some sideways noses, and some no noses at all; some had noses like elephant trunks, and others breathed through noses on their foreheads.
हिंदी अनुवाद
किसी की नाक बहुत बड़ी थी, किसी की टेढ़ी थी और किसी की नाक थी ही नहीं। किसी की नाक हाथी की सूंड जैसी थी और कोई (माथे पर स्थित) नासिका से सांस लेती थी।
English Commentary
The final verse of this set focuses on nasal deformities. In Indian aesthetics, a sharp, well-formed nose is a hallmark of beauty; these guards are the exact opposite. From having no nose (anāsikāḥ) to having trunks (gajanannibhanāsā), they represent the distortion of form. The repetition of the forehead-breathing feature reinforces the alien nature of these beings.

यह श्लोक नाक (नासिका) की विकृतियों पर केंद्रित है। 'अनासिकाः' (बिना नाक वाली) शूर्पणखा की याद दिलाती है। 'ललाटोच्च्वासनासिकाः' (माथे से सांस लेने वाली) पुनरावृत्ति है (श्लोक 5 के समान), जो इस लक्षण की विचित्रता पर जोर देती है। हाथी जैसी सूंड होना ('गजनन्निभनासा') कुरूपता के साथ-साथ शक्ति का भी प्रतीक है।
