Translation
They were fierce, with smoke-colored hair and deformed faces. They were constantly drinking intoxicants and were always fond of meat and wine.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे विकराल थीं, उनके बाल धुएं के रंग (धूसर) के थे और उनके चेहरे विकृत थे। वे निरंतर मदिरा पान करती थीं और सदा मांस तथा शराब की प्रेमी थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki describes the lifestyle of the guards to further distinguish them from the ascetic Sita. Their "smoke-colored hair" (dhūmrakeśī) gives them an unkempt, ominous appearance. Their constant consumption of alcohol and love for meat highlights their indulgence in sensory pleasures and lack of restraint (Tamas Guna). This creates a powerful juxtaposition: Sita, who is practicing extreme austerity and likely fasting, is surrounded by gluttonous beings reeking of flesh and liquor. This sensory assault—the smell and sight of such indulgence—adds another layer of psychological torture to Sita's captivity.

यह श्लोक राक्षसियों की तामसिक जीवनशैली पर प्रकाश डालता है। 'धूम्रकेशी' (धुएं जैसे बाल) अमंगल और अशुभ का प्रतीक है। 'पिबन्तीः सततं पानं' (निरंतर मदिरा पान) उनकी इंद्रिय लोलुपता और संयमहीनता को दर्शाता है। एक ओर सीता जी हैं जो कंद-मूल भी ग्रहण नहीं कर रही हैं और घोर उपवास में हैं, और दूसरी ओर ये राक्षसियां हैं जो मांस और मदिरा में लिप्त हैं। यह विरोधाभास (Contrast) वाल्मीकि जी ने जानबूझकर रचा है ताकि सात्विक और तामसिक वृत्तियों के बीच के संघर्ष को उभारा जा सके।
