Translation
She was like a female elephant separated from her herd and surrounded by lions. She appeared like the crescent moon obscured by autumn clouds at the end of the rainy season.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे झुंड से बिछड़ी हुई और सिंहों से घिरी हुई बंधी हथिनी के समान थीं। वे वर्षा ऋतु के अंत में शरद ऋतु के बादलों से ढकी हुई चन्द्ररेखा के समान प्रतीत हो रही थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses two similes to capture Sita's predicament. First, she is likened to a Gajavadhu (female elephant) separated from her herd and surrounded by lions. This emphasizes her noble nature being threatened by natural predators (the Rakshasas). Second, she is compared to a Candrarekha (streak of the moon) covered by clouds. Just as the moon is temporarily obscured but retains its luminosity, Sita's glory is currently veiled by sorrow but remains intact. The "crescent" implies a potential for fullness—just as the moon waxes, her fortune may yet return.

यहाँ दो सशक्त उपमाएं हैं। पहली, 'गजवधूमिव' (हथिनी के समान)—हथिनी एक राजसी और शांत प्राणी है, जो सिंहों (राक्षसों) के बीच घिर गई है। यह उनकी असहायता और खतरे को दर्शाता है। दूसरी उपमा, 'चन्द्ररेखाम्' (चन्द्रमा की रेखा/कला)—जैसे शरद ऋतु के बादल चन्द्रमा को पूरी तरह नहीं ढक पाते, थोड़ी चमक दिखती रहती है, वैसे ही सीता का तेज कष्टों के बाद भी पूरी तरह नष्ट नहीं हुआ है। वह धुंधला अवश्य हुआ है, पर उसका अस्तित्व मिटा नहीं है। यह उपमा आशा की किरण जगाती है।
