Translation
Though in the midst of the Ashoka (grief-less) grove, she was immersed in an ocean of grief. Surrounded by those Rakshasis, she looked like Rohini seized by planets (Grahas).

अशोक वाटिका के मध्य में होते हुए भी वे शोक के सागर में डूबी हुई थीं। वहां उन राक्षसियों से घिरी हुई वे ऐसी लग रही थीं जैसे रोहिणी (नक्षत्र) क्रूर ग्रहों से घिर गई हो।
English Commentary
The verse opens with a bitter irony: Sita is in the Ashoka (literally "sorrow-less") Vana, yet she is drowning in a Shoka-sagara (ocean of sorrow). The environment mocks her internal state. The concluding simile is astrological: Sita is likened to Rohini (a prominent star/constellation associated with the Moon) besieged by Grahas (malefic planets). Just as a celestial body's radiance is temporarily compromised during a planetary conjunction or eclipse, Sita's brilliance is currently overshadowed by evil forces. This implies a cosmic significance to her suffering and hints at an eventual release, as planetary alignments are transient.

यहाँ विरोधाभास अलंकार का सुंदर प्रयोग है। 'अशोक' का अर्थ है 'शोक-रहित', किन्तु उसी वाटिका में सीता 'शोक-सागर' में डूबी हैं। स्थान का नाम उनके अनुभव के ठीक विपरीत है। अंत में एक ज्योतिषीय उपमा है: 'सग्रहामिव रोहिणीम्'। रोहिणी चन्द्रमा की सबसे प्रिय पत्नी/नक्षत्र है। जब रोहिणी मंगल या शनि जैसे क्रूर ग्रहों से घिर जाती है (युति करती है), तो यह कष्टकारी होता है। सीता (रोहिणी) राक्षसों (क्रूर ग्रहों) से घिरी हैं, जो यह संकेत देता है कि यह ग्रहण अस्थायी है और अंततः वे मुक्त होंगी, जैसे ग्रह नक्षत्र को पार कर जाते हैं।
