Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
संवृताम् मृगशाबाक्षीं ददर्श हनुमान् कपिः ।
ताम् देवीं दीनवदनामदीनां भर्तृतेजसा ।
।
॥५-१७-२७॥
saṃvṛtām mṛgaśābākṣīṃ dadarśa hanumān kapiḥ |
tām devīṃ dīnavadanāmadīnāṃ bhartṛtejasā ॥5-17-27॥
Translation
The monkey Hanuman saw the doe-eyed goddess surrounded (by demonesses). Although her face was sorrowful, she was not spiritless, being sustained by the power of her husband.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हनुमान जी ने मृगछौने के समान नेत्रों वाली उस देवी को (राक्षसियों से) घिरे हुए देखा। यद्यपि उनका मुख दीन (उदास) था, तथापि पति के तेज के प्रभाव से वह दीन (मन से कमजोर) नहीं थीं।
English Commentary
This shloka presents a masterful contrast between appearance and reality. Sita is described as dīnavadanām (having a sorrowful or piteous face), which is expected given her captivity. However, Valmiki immediately qualifies this by calling her adīnām (not weak or miserable in spirit). The source of this inner strength is bhartṛtejasā—the glory and spiritual power of her husband, Rama. Even while physically surrounded and looking as vulnerable as a young doe (mṛgaśābākṣīṃ), her connection to Rama empowers her. It suggests that while her body is captive, her spirit remains unbroken, fortified by her identity as Rama’s wife and her unshakeable faith in his prowess.

यहाँ सीता जी के बाह्य और आंतरिक व्यक्तित्व का सूक्ष्म अंतर स्पष्ट किया गया है। बाह्य रूप से वे 'दीनवदनाम्' (उदास मुख वाली) हैं, क्योंकि वे वियोग और भय के वातावरण में हैं। किन्तु आन्तरिक रूप से वे 'अदीनाम्' (दीनता से रहित/सशक्त) हैं। इसका कारण 'भर्तृतेजसा' बताया गया है—अर्थात् श्रीराम का तेज और प्रभाव उनकी रक्षा कर रहा है और उन्हें मानसिक संबल प्रदान कर रहा है। 'मृगशाबाक्षीं' (हिरनी जैसी आँखों वाली) विशेषण उनकी मासूमियत और भयभीत अवस्था को दर्शाता है, जबकि 'अदीनाम्' उनके क्षत्राणी सुलभ धैर्य और साहस का प्रतीक है। यह श्लोक सिद्ध करता है कि सच्चा बल शारीरिक नहीं, अपितु आत्मिक और नैतिक होता है।
