Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एकाक्षीमेककर्णाम् च कर्णप्रावरणाम् तथा ।
अकर्णाम् शङ्कुकर्णाम् च मस्तकोच्छ्वासनासिकाम् ।

ekākṣīmekakarṇām ca karṇaprāvaraṇām tathā |
akarṇām śaṅkukarṇām ca mastakocchvāsanāsikām ॥5-17-5॥
Translation
One had only one eye, another one ear, and another used her ears as a covering; one had no ears, another had cone-like ears, and yet another breathed through a nose located on her forehead.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उनमें से कोई) एक आँख वाली, (कोई) एक कान वाली और (कोई) कानों को ही ओढ़ने वाली (लम्बे कानों वाली) थी। (कोई) बिना कानों वाली, (कोई) कील (शंकु) जैसे कानों वाली और (कोई) मस्तक से श्वास लेने वाली (जिसकी नाक माथे पर हो) थी।
English Commentary
Valmiki begins a catalogue of deformities. These descriptions are not merely physical but symbolic of chaos and adharma. Features like karṇaprāvaraṇām (ears used as blankets) and mastakocchvāsanāsikām (breathing through the top of the head/forehead) evoke a sense of unnatural monstrosity. This imagery isolates Sita further, placing her in a world that is visually and biologically alien to human norms.

अब वाल्मीकि राक्षसियों की शारीरिक विकृतियों का विस्तृत वर्णन करते हैं। यह वर्णन भयावहता उत्पन्न करने के लिए है। 'कर्णप्रावरणाम्' का अर्थ है जिसके कान इतने बड़े हों कि वह उन्हें शॉल की तरह ओढ़ सके। 'मस्तकोच्छ्वासनासिकाम्' एक अत्यंत विचित्र और डरावनी छवि है—नाक चेहरे पर न होकर माथे पर है, जैसे व्हेल मछली का रंध्र। यह सृष्टि के नियमों के विपरीत आकृतियाँ हैं, जो राक्षसी प्रवृति को शारीरिक रूप देती हैं।
