Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
निद्रामदपरीताक्ष्यो रावणस्योत्तमाः स्त्रियः ।
अनुजग्मुः पतिं वीरम् घनम् विद्युल्लता इव ।
।

nidrāmadaparītākṣyo rāvaṇasyottamāḥ striyaḥ |
anujagmuḥ patiṃ vīram ghanam vidyullatā iva ॥5-18-15॥
Translation
With eyes filled with sleep and intoxication, those excellent women of Ravana followed their heroic husband, just as streaks of lightning follow a cloud.

नींद और नशे (मद) से चढ़ी हुई आँखों वाली रावण की वे उत्तम स्त्रियाँ अपने वीर पति के पीछे ऐसे चल रही थीं, जैसे बिजली की लताएं बादलों के पीछे चलती हैं।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a classic poetic simile here: Ravana is the dark rain cloud (ghanam), and his golden-complexioned, bejeweled wives are the lightning streaks (vidyullatā) trailing him. This captures both the visual contrast and the dynamic energy of the group. The women are described as nidrāmadaparītākṣyo—their eyes heavy with sleep and mild intoxication/lust, adding a languid sensuality to the scene. Calling him patiṃ vīram (heroic husband) acknowledges that despite his villainy towards Sita, he is a beloved and admired husband to these women.

यह एक प्रसिद्ध और अत्यंत सुंदर उपमा है। रावण का रंग काला (मेघ समान) है और स्त्रियाँ गोरी और आभूषणों से चमक रही हैं (विद्युत समान)। इसलिए उन्हें 'घनम् विद्युल्लता इव' (बादल के पीछे बिजली की तरह) कहा गया है। उनकी आँखें 'निद्रामदपरीताक्ष्यो' (नींद और नशीले मद से भरी) हैं, जो रात भर चले विलास और अभी-अभी जागने की स्थिति को दर्शाती हैं। वे 'उत्तमाः स्त्रियः' हैं, अर्थात् सौंदर्य और गुणों में श्रेष्ठ, फिर भी वे रावण का अनुगमन कर रही हैं। यह रावण के व्यक्तित्व के आकर्षण (dark charisma) को सिद्ध करता है।
