घोर्णन्त्यो मदशेषेण निद्रया च शुभाननाः ।
स्वेदक्लिष्टाङ्गकुसुमाः सुमाल्याकुलमूर्धजाः ।

Ghorṇantyo madaśeṣeṇa nidrayā ca śubhānanāḥ |
Svedakliṣṭāṅgakusumāḥ sumālyākulamūrdhajāḥ ॥5-18-17॥
Translation
Reeling from the remnants of intoxication and sleep, those beautiful-faced women stumbled along. The flowers adorning their bodies were wilted from perspiration, and the beautiful garlands in their hair were in disarray.

वे (रावण की पत्नियाँ) मद (नशे) के शेष प्रभाव और नींद के कारण लड़खड़ा रही थीं। उनके सुंदर मुख (शुभाननाः) थे, अंग पर सुशोभित फूल पसीने (स्वेद) से मुरझा गए थे, और उनके बालों में लगीं सुंदर मालाएँ बिखर गई थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki provides a vivid, almost cinematic description of the women in Ravana's harem. The term madaśeṣeṇa (remnant of intoxication) suggests a night of revelry whose effects have spilled over into the morning. Despite their disheveled state—indicated by svedakliṣṭa (wilted by sweat) flowers and disordered hair—the poet retains the epithet śubhānanāḥ (of auspicious/beautiful faces), highlighting that their beauty persists even in disarray. This verse serves to illustrate the hedonistic atmosphere surrounding Ravana. It also juxtaposes the physical luxury and excess of Lanka with the ascetic austerity of Sita, whom Hanuman is seeking. The imagery conveys a sense of hurried movement and loss of composure due to their infatuation with the Rakshasa king.
